This kind of fracture occurs at the the lower end of the radius when a person tries to stop a fall by landing on his or her hands. It's named for the Irish surgeon Abraham Colles, and is also known as a fractured wrist.
The impact of someone trying to stop their fall will cause the bone to break if it is weakened by osteoporosis.
