infections can last weeks to years
main reservoir is infected glands
transmission mainly during milking
Term
contagious mastitis pathogens
Definition
streptococcus algalactea
staph aureus
mycoplasma spp
strep dysagalactae
cornebacterium bovis
Term
mastitis: Strep agalactiae
Definition
-gram(+), obligate
-often subclinical
-high SCC
-only B toxin
-large # bacteria shed in milk
-dx:CAMP synergistic hemolysis (w/ S.aureus)
-tx: abx, eradication possible
Term
mastitis: Staph aureus
Definition
-gram (+) faculative intracellular path (not an obligate parasite of the MG)
-major source of infection: infected quarters
-spread via: sloppy milking and vector (fly) transmission
-can be subclinical, acute, chronic or gangrenous
-a-toxin => necrosis, abcessation and fibrosis
-vax: will not prevent dx but will decrease clinical signs
tx: lactating cow therapy
-a and B toxin
Term
mastitis: arcanobacterium pyogenes
Definition
-dry cow or summer mastitis
-thick pus, lots of it
-can be transmitted by flies
tx: dry cow therapy
Term
mastitis: mycoplasma spp
Definition
-M. bovis most common
Term
mastitis: strep dysagalactiae
Definition
-contagious and environmental
Term
mastitis: Corynebacterium bovis
Definition
-commensal of the MG
-low grade leukocytosis
-often due to lack of post dip tx or no dry cow tx
Term
mastitis: control dipping
Definition
pre-dip to avoid environmental mastitis
post-dip to avoid contagious mastitis
Term
mastitis: lactating cow therapy
Definition
strep agalactiae only
Term
mastitis: dry cow therapy
Definition
-tx during 60 day dry period
-use just tip
Term
environmental mastitis: pathogens
Definition
-coliforms: most common (E. coli, proteus, pseudomonas)
-arcanobacterium pyogenes
-S. dysagalactiae
-S. Uberis
S. bovis
Term
mastitis: coliforms
Definition
moisture, humidity, heat
udder edema
saw dust- klebsiella
water- pseudomonas
most will clear spontaneously- 10% chronic
-don't want to rx with abx b/c can cause septicemia => DIC
