Lymphatic System Functions
Definition
  1. Fluid Recovery
  2. Immunity
  3. Lipid Absorption
Term

Lymphatic System Functions:

Fluid Recovery

Definition
What isn't reabsorbed back into vessels goes to lymph
Term

Lymph System Functions:

Immunity

Definition

Lyphnodes are filters, that is why they swell, they filter the blood and remove

Lymphocytes (WBC) stay in lymphatic system and fights what is filtered

Term

Lymphatic System Functions:

Lipid Absorption

Definition

Lipid not water soluble, can't travel in the blood well because high water concentration

Lymphatic system gets fat from small intestine to the liver -- this is done by specialized lymph vessels = lacteals that help digest fat

Term
Components of Lymphatic System
Definition

Lymph - tissue fluid

Lymphatic Vessels - carry lymph around body

Lymphatic Tissues - groups of lymphocytes and macrophages that populate organs in body

Lymphatic Organs - thymus, lymphnodes, tonsils, spleen

Term

 Lymphatic Vessels

Definition
  • All over body, can contact almost any cell
  • More like veins - have valves
  • Closed on 1 end
  • More porous that capillaries - pores larger, get the junk and cells through
Term

Flow of Lymph

Definition

Lymph capillaries  -->

Collecting vessels  -->

Lymphatic Trunk (drain sections of body, 6 of them) -->

Collecting Ducts (largest, example thoracic duct) -->

Subclavian Veins -->

All goes back to bloodstream after this sequence of filters
