Term
Synarthrodial Joints
Definition
These joints are the least numerous in the body and are referred to as "immovable"
Examples:
1)Sutures of the skull
2)Sockets of the teeth also called gomphosis
Term
Amphiarthrodial Joints
Definition
These are joints that allow for minimal movement between bones. There are three types.
1)Syndesmosis
2)Symphysis
3)Synchondrosis
Term
Syndesmosis Joints
Definition
Joints held together by a strong ligamentous structure, like an interosseous membrane.
Example: Tibiofibular Joint of the leg
Term
Symphysis Joints
Definition
these joints are separated by a fibrocartilage pad that allows for very slight movement.
Examples: Include the Pubic Symphysis and the Vertebral Discs
Term
Synchondrosis Joints
Definition
These joints are separated by hyaline cartilage that also allow for minimal movement.
Example: Costochondral Joints of the ribs with the sternum
Term
Diarthrodial Joints
Definition
Also referred to as "Synovial" joints, these joints are the most numerous in the body and allow for the greatest range of motion. There are six groups of synovial joints: Also called "freely movable joints"
Term
Arthrodial Joints
Definition
Common Name: Gliding
Movements: Permits limited gliding movement; Multiaxial
Examples: Intercarpals, intertarsals, sternoclavicular joint, intervertebral facet joints, acromioclavicular joints, costovertebral joints.
Term
Condyloid Joints
Definition
Common Name: Ellipsoidal
Movements: Movement in two planes but not rotation. Flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, circumduction; Biaxial
Examples: Radiocarpal (wrist), metacarpophalangeal joint, metatarsophalangeal joint
Term
Enarthrodial Joints
Definition
Common Name: Ball and Socket
Movements: Movement in all planes, rotation, circumduction, flexion, extension, abduction, adduction; Multiaxial
Examples: Glenohumeral (shoulder), acetabularfemoral (hip)
Term
Ginglymus Joints
Definition
Common name: Hinge
Movements: Wide range of movement on one plane only. Flexion and Extension; move in one plane - Uniaxial
Examples: Humerorulnar joint (elbow), talocrural (ankle), knee joints, DIP, PIP, IP
Term
Sellar Joints
Definition
Common Name: Saddle
Movements: All ball and socket movements except rotation; biaxial
Example: Only at carpometacarpal joint of the thumb
Term
Trochoid Joints
Definition
Common Name: Pivot or Screw
Movements: Rotational movement around a long axis; uniaxial
Examples: Radius at the Distal Radioulnar joint, Proximal Radioulnar joint, Atlantoaxial joint (C1 and C2) (odontoid process)
