Definition

Cause: War of 1812<br>

Event: New England politicians passed resolutions condmning the war and recommending consitutional amendments accomadating their opinions and threatened to ditch the US and making peace with England, but he War ended before anything was done.<br>

Result: Went against Federalists who were prominent in New England at the time and helped kick their party out of existance

Definition

Cause: see Embargo Act (Jefferson)<br>

Event: Modified the Embargo Act by opening trade with everywhere except England and France. Like the Embargo it didn't stagnate attacks on US ships.<br>

Result: Domestic manufacturing increased.

Treaty of Ghent
Definition

Cause: Both sides of the War of 1812 were eager for peace.<br>

Event: So they met in Ghent, Belgium and restored pre-war borders and peace with no reference to impressment or victory for either sides.<br>

(1) increased nationalism and the motivation produce/manufacture in-country<br>

(2) demonstrated ability to defend its rights, earning national respect<br>

(3) foreign relations improved<br>

(a) Rushed Bagot Agreement 1817: forbid either nation from holding warships on the Great Lakes<br>

(b) Treaty of 1818: fixed the Canada/US boundary, ensured US fishing rights off the coast of NFL and Labrador, and opened Oregon Country to settlers of both sides<br>

(3) Westward expansion due to removal of armed indian opposition between the Appalachians and the Mississippi (Tecumseh's death in the NW Territory and Jackson's oppressment in teh Old SW
