Term

CNS

Collection of nerve cell bodies in CNS

Bundle of nerve axons in CNS

Definition

Brain + Spinal Cord

nucleus (nuclei = pleural)

tract

Term

PNS

Collection of nerve cell bodies in PNS

Bundle of nerve axons in PNS

Definition

Crainial + Spinal nerves

ganglia (ganglia)

Peripheral nerve

Term

Spinal Nerves

Definition
  • 31 pairs, abbraviated by letter designating the vertebral region and number (eg. C1 indicates the 1st cervical spine nerve)
  • 8 cervical (C), 12 thoracic (T), 5 Lumbar (L), 5 Sacral (S), 1 coccygeal
  • Arise from spinal cord and most exit through intertebral foramina in vertebral column
  • C1 spinal nerves exit between skull and C1 -- there are 8 pairs of C spine nerves (C1-C8), but there are 7 cervical vertebra

Term
Parts of typical spinal nerve
Definition
  • each spinal nerve arises from spinal cord via nerve rootlets
  • rootlets (anterior and posterior) converge to form a ventral (anterior) root and a dorsal (posterior) root
  • ventral and dorsal roots join to from a spinal nerve
  • spinal nerve divides to give rise to a ventral (anterior) ramus and a dorsal (posterior) ramus
Term
Typical Spinal Nerve Image
Definition
Term
Typical Spinal Nerve Image 2
Definition

rootlets, ventral/ dosral roots, spinal nerve, ventral/ dorsal ramus

Term

Somatic Nervous System

Autonomic Nervous System (Visceral Motor)

Visceral Sensory

Definition

motor to skeletal

sensory from skin (pain, temp, touch)

motor to smooth muscle (e.g. organs), cardiac muscle, and glands

Sensory from organs (ischemia, strech)

Term

Somatic Motor Pathway

Location of motor cell body:

Definition

Location of motor cell body: ventral horn

motor fiber exits spinal cord --> ventral root --> spinal nerve --> dorsal or ventral ramus (depending on final location of end target muscle)

Term
Somatic motor pathway image
Definition
Term
Somatic Sensory Pathway
Definition

from skin of body wall to spinal cord via: ventral or dorsal ramus --> spinal nerve --> dorsal root (part that enters spinal cord)

location of sensory cell bodies dorsal root ganglion

Term
Summary of Somatic Nervous System Organization
Definition

Ventral roots: carry motor fibers only

Dorsal roots: carry sensory fibers only

Spinal nerves: carry both motor and sensory fibers

Venral rami: carry motor and sensory fibers

Dorsal rami: carry motor and sensory fibers (innervate a small region of skin and muscle along dorsal midline)

Term

Somatic NS: Brachial Plexus

Lumbosacral plexus

Definition

a network of ventral rami (motor and sensory) to upper extremity

network of ventral rami (motor + sensory) to lower extremity and perineum

Term

Somatic NS: Mytome

:Dermatome

Definition

mytome: a mass of muscle supplied by a single spinal nerve

dermatome: an area of skin supplied by a single spinal nerve

Term

Automonic Nervous System: 2 branches

and the 2 types of neurons

Definition

Sympathetic: fight or flight, innervates tissues in the body wall (eg. sweat glands, arrector pili muscles, peripheral blood vessels, etc.) as well as in the body cavities.

Parasympathetic: veg and relax, innervates tissues in the body cavities only

2 types of neurons: preganglionic cell body and fiber and postganlgionic cell body and fiber

Term
Preganglionic Cell Bodies Locations in parasympathetic and sympathetic
Definition

Parasympathetic (craniosacral): brain or sacral segments of spinal cord

Sympathetic (thoracolumbar): lateral horn of thoracolumbar segments of spinal cord (T1-L2/L3)

Term
Postganglionic Cell Bodies Locations in parasympathetic and sympathetic
Definition

Parasympathetic: ganglia in the head or in the walls of organs

Sympathetic: prevertebral ganglia or paravertebral ganglia of the sympathetic trunk (chain) -- (ganlia run alongside spinal column)

Term
Sympathetic ganglia continued...
Definition

prevertebral ganglia lie anterior to vertebral column and are associated with branches of aorta

paravertebral ganglia lie lateral to ventral column (a paravertebral ganglion is associated with each spinal nerve) -- in cervical only 3 ganglia are associated with 8 cervical spinal nerves

sympathetic trunks - linked to paravertebral ganglia

sympathetic trunks are tethered to ventral rami via white (entrance) and grey (exit) rami communications

Term
Visceral Sensory
Definition

sensory from organs (ischemia and stretch)

Single neuron

travel toward spinal cord alongside parasympathetic and sympathetic fibers

enter dorsal root

Term
Referred Pain
Definition
describes the phenomenon of visceral (organ) pain being perceived as somatic (body wall) pain
