Term
Splenius Cervicis
Definition
  • Origin: Nuchal lig. and SP's of C7-T3 or T4
  • Insertion: Tubercles of transverse vertebral proccesses of C1-C3 or C4
  • Action: Lat. flexion of neck to side of active muscle; extension of head and nexk when working with splenius capitis
  • Innervation: Dorsal rami of spinal nerves.
Term
Splenius Capitus
Definition
  • Origin: Nuchal ligt. and SP's of C7-T3 or T4
  • Insertion: Mastoid proccess and lat. 1/3 of superior nuchal line
  • Action: Rotation of head to side of active muscle; extension of head and neck when working with splenius cervicis
  • Innervation: Dorsal rami of spinal nerves
Term
Iliocostalis
Definition
  • Origin: Iliac crest, thoracolumbar fascia and SP's of T11-L5
  • Insertion: Lumborum- angles of lower 6 ribs; thoracis upper 6 ribs; cervicis TVP of C4-6
  • Action: Extension of the vertebral column
  • Innervation: Dorsal primary rami

Term
Longissimus
Definition
  • Origin: Iliac crest, thoracolumbar fascia and SP's of T11-L5
  • Insertion: Thoracis- TVP's of thoracic vertibrae and ribs; Cervicis- TVP's of C2-6; Capitis- Mastoid process
  • Action: Extension of the vertebral Column
  • Innervation: Dorsal Primary rami
Term
Spinalis
Definition
  • Origin: SP's
  • Insertion: thoracis- SP's of T1-8; Cervicis- SP's of C2-4 (often absent); Capitis- fuses with semispinalis capitis to form biventoer capitis.
  • Action: Extension of the vertebral Column
  • Innervation: Dorsal primary rami
Term
Semispinalis
Definition
  • Origin: Thoracis- TVP's T6-T10; Cervicis- TVP's T1-T6; Capitis- TVP's C7-T6
  • Insertion: Thoracis- SP's of C6-T4; Cervicis- SP's C2-C5; Capitis- occipital bone and articular process of C4-C6.
  • Action: Thoracis- Bilateral extension of spine; unilateral rotation to opposite side; Cervicis- same as thoracis; will also unilaterallly lat. flex the spine; Capitis- extension and lat. flexion of head; rotation to opposite side
  • Innervation: dorsal primary rami
Term
Interspinalis
Definition
  • Origin: sup. surfaces of SP's of cervical and lumbar vertebrae
  • Insertion: Inferior surfaces of SP's of vertebrae sup. to origin
  • Action: Extension and rotation of vertebral column
  • Innervation: Dorsal Rami of spinal muscle.
Term
Intertransversarii
Definition
  • Origin: TVP's of cervical and lumbar vertebrae
  • Insertion: TVP's of adjacent vertebrae
  • Action: lat. flexion of vertebral column; bilaterally, stabilize vertebral column
  • Innervation: Dorsal and ventral rami of spinal nerve.
Term
Levatores Costarum
Definition
  • Origin: Longus - TVP's of T7-T10; Brevis- TVP's of C7-T11.
  • Insertion: Longus- Outer part of rib, 2 ribs below origin; Brevis- outer part of rib below origin.
  • Action: Elevates ribs in inspiration, lat. flexion of vertebral column
  • Innervation: Dorsal rami of C8-T11 nn.
Term
Rotatores
Definition
  • Origin: Longus and Brevis- TVP's (best developed in thoracic region)
  • Insertion: Longus- pass superomedially to junction of lamina and TVP or SP 2 segments above. Brevis- Pass superomedially to junction of lamina and TVP or SP immediately above .
  • Action: Stabilize vertebrae and assist with extension and rotatory movements; proprioception.
  • Innervation: Dorsal rami of spinal nerve.
