Cards

Term
3 lymphocyte subsets
Definition
T cells
B cells

Natural killer cells
Term
Function of primary lymphoid tissue

Give an example of primary tissue
Definition
where lymphocytes mature

(bone marrow, thymus)
Term
Function of secondary lymphoid tissue, give an example
Definition
Where APCs interact with T or B cells to present antigens

e.g. lymph nodes, spleen, peyers patches, bone marrow
Term
Afferent vs efferent lymphatic vessels
Definition
afferent = brings lymph into the lymph node, bringing antigen with it

efferent - activated effector cells (B cells, T cells) leave the nodes and go to their targets
Term
What is a mitogen?
Definition
A motisis-inducing molecule

-can activate B and T cells non-specifically, recruiting abnormally high numbers of lymphocytes without the normal need for a recptor-mediated recognition of the antigen
Term
What are the 2 triggers for Natural Killer cell-mediated killing
Definition
-if a cell cuts back on the amount of MHC class I molecules it is expressing, the NK cells will be more likely to kill it

-expression of stress proteins on cells ("kill me pls")
Term
What trimolecular complex is require for NKT cell activation?
Definition
An invariant T cell receptor responds to a special MHC class I molecule caleld CD1d, and then gets activated by glycolipid antigens
Term
What are NKT cells?
Definition
A 'hybrid' between cells of the innate and acquired immune system.
-Have T cell receptor, but can respond to glycolipid antigens, not just peptides, and respond more quickly than normal T cells
