Term
Choke
Definition
complete or partial obstruction of esophagus, usually from eating too fast. Most often resolves itself.
Term
Potomac Horse Fever
Definition
Seasonal, spread by insect via snail vector (insect: Erlichia risticci). Causes high temps (103-107), loss of appetite, rapid onset, explosive diarrhea, rapid weight loss. Vaccine available, ineffective against all strains, not recommended.
Term
Anemia
Definition
iron deficiency, usually caused by inadequate feed.
Term
Azoturia
Definition
"Monday Morning Dz.", occurs before exercise, sweating, tied up, wine-colored urine, caused by metabolism failure
Term
Founder
Definition
aka Laminitis: classic stance, hot feet, elevated pulse, caused by excess feed, trauma, or underlying condition. Guarded prognosis- likely to move differently.
Term
Metabolic Bone Disease/ Acquired Contracted Tendons/Osteochondrosis
Definition
All young horse disorders that can be associated with feed regime. High copper intake can reduce severity. Often occurs in fast-growing breeds like TB's.
Term
Colic
Definition
variety of conditions, many causes. 2 forms of pain: irreversible, severe, unrelenting, & intermittent, reversible. Rapid heart rate, sweating, weak.
Term
Strongyles
Definition
Worms. Large and Small varieties. Large are most damaging. Almost any monthly dewormer (ivermectin) will kill these guys.
Term
Large Strongyle Life Cycle
Definition
Adults (intestine), takes 6-12 months to maturity--> Eggs in feces, drop out--> 1st and 2nd stage larvae live in feces-->3rd stage larvae migrate to grass and are ingested--> Migrate thru blood vessels--> Adults in intestines.
Term
Ascarids
Definition
Generally seen in horses between 2-3 yrs old, rare in older horses. Results in pot belly, thin on top, rough coat. Need multiple small doses of dewormer to remove.
Term
Ascarid life cycle
Definition
Adult ascarids (intestines)--> Eggs passed in feces--> infected larvae ingested-->penetrate gut wall-->Can migrate to lungs--> adults.
Term
Bots
Definition
aka Gastrophilius, can damage stomach (suck blood), cause digestive disturbance, migrate after digestion
Term
Bot Life Cycle
Definition
Larvae (gastric parasite: 9-10 months)-->Larvae pass in manure in summer, pupate in feces (2-4 days)--> Adult fly (~5 days)--> lay eggs on hair, ( head, legs lips). Warmth and moisture cause eggs to hatch, migrate in.
Term
Pinworms
Definition
Oxyuris Equi, attach to gut lining of large horses usually in large intesting, can cause colic. Picked up from posts, walls, dirnkers or direct contact.
Term
Tapeworm
Definition
anopolcephala perfoliatea magna- lives in large intestines, causes porr growth and weight loss. Avermectin products don't work on tapeworms- need to direct one worming per year for this parasite.
Term
Normal Heart Rate
Definition
28-40 BPM
Term
Normal respiration
Definition
8-19 breaths per minute
Term
Influenza
Definition
Fever up to 107, biphasic, dry cough-moist later, viral, downtime.
Term
Viral rhinopneumonitis
Definition
occurs late fall/early winter, similar to influenza, causes abortion of pregnant mares in late preg., neurological strain. Vax available, doesn't prevent neuro. strain.
Term
Equine viral arteritis
Definition
similar signs to influenza, early pregnancy abortion, infrequent occurance.
Term
Strangles/Distemper
Definition
young horses, very contagious, destroys barn reps., caused by streptococcus equi. Signs: high fever, difficulty breathing, lesions
Term
Rhodococcus
Definition
Only effect foals, 80% dies, normally found in environment- not really prevent.
Term
Heaves
Definition
Chronic emphysema breathing probs.
