Andrew Johnson:
Definition
A Democrat, from North Carolina. He was the 17th president following the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln, during the Reconstruction period. He was controversial, and was deemed to favor the white south by being lenient on them with his conciliatory policies and his hurry to reincorporate the former Confederate states back into the union. For his lenient plan toward the South he was attacked by the Radical Republican Party and they tried to impeach him in 1868, but he was acquitted by a single vote in the Senate.

Freedman’s Bureau
Definition
Implemented by Lincoln. Passed by Congress on March, 3rd 1865. Purpose was to aid former slaves with food and housing, education, healthcare and employment.

Civil Rights Bill, 1866:
Definition
a federal law in the United States declaring that everyone (except Native Americans) born in the U.S. Is a citizen, without regard to race, color, or previous condition of slavery or involuntary servitude. It was an attempt to overturn Southern Black Codes.

15th amendment (1870):
Definition
prohibited the denial of suffrage based on that citizen's "race, color, or previous condition of servitude" (i.e., slavery). It was ratified on February 3, 1870.

Homestead Act, 1862:
Definition
Was a pro growth strategy, and a federal law signed in by President Lincoln on May 20th 1862, that allowed people to get to up to 160 acres of land, west of the Mississippi River for free if they filled out an application. They had to live there for five years, improve the land, and file for deed of title. Or after six months they could purchase the land for 1.25 an acre. Homestead was discontinued in 1976

Wounded Knee:
Definition
It happened on December 29, 1890 near Wounded Knee Creek. Started with a scuffle over deaf tribesman Black Coyote’s rifle ( he either didn’t want to give it up or didn’t hear what was asked of him) and when a shot was fired the 7th Cavalry who was there to disarm the Native Americans opened fire on all sides. It was massacre of 200 Sioux men, women and children, even some of the 7th Calvary men died of friendly fire because it was so chaotic. The battle marked the end of the Sioux independence and, took away the autonomy on all reservations.

Dawes Severalty Act
Definition
Signed into law February 8th, 1886. Sponsored by Henry L. Dawes, It’s disturbed land to individual Indians who agreed to leave tribes, become citizens and convert to Christianity. Tribes lost 60-70% of their land. Indian Reservation act of 1934, reversed the act.

Definition
Leader of the movement in Sliver currency movement. Known for his religious laced speeches, and belief in the rightness of the common people he was called the “The Great Commoner.” Lost the 1896 Election to William McKinley. With his defeat the Populist Party dies, rural voting powers is reduced. And it’s power ends with a shift toward the modern age

The idea of survival of the fittest, in free market capitalism. Basically on the finically successful were rich because they were simply better then the rest and thus were the fittest to survive.

Formed by Rockerfeller in 1870, he used dirty business tactics to drive other oils business under, it made him the richest man in the country and allowed him control of 90% of the oil in the U.S.

Definition
Intended to be an insult against unregulated capitalism, he used the meat packing industry as an example. He described unsanitary conditions and the inhumane conditions/ treatment of the workers. The novel was so influential that it spurred government regulation of the industry, as well as the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act.

Definition
In Chicago, on May 1st 1886, protesters were marching for an 8hr workday. They run into police and violence ensues, 4 protesters are killed. So the protesters end up protesting against police brutality on May 4ht in response, a protester throws a bomb into the police that show up to break up their demonstration. 7 officers are killed and 60 are wounded. Created Anti-Labor feelings. 4 people ended up being hanged for it, 1 committed suicide before then and in 1893 the new major pardoned 3 of the remaining prisoners.
