Definition

Definition
President James Monroe tells the rest of the world that any new colonies in the western hemisphere would not be permitted by the U.S. The U.S. does not have the right or power to do this, but Britain backs us up in exchange for some trade there.

Definition
Deals with the question of the expansion of slavery in the west. Missouri would come into the Union as a slave state, Maine would be free, and any areas North of Missouri's southern border in the LA Purchase would be free, below Missouri would be slave territories. Later overruled by the Dred Scott decision.

This the debate over how much power a state has. Can a state chose to not follow federal law? What happens if a federal and state law conflict? The South feels that states should have more power than the federal government, whereas the North favors the federal government over the states.

South Carolina threatened to leave the Union because of a high tariff set by Andrew Jackson. Can a state do this? At this point, the country is unsure.

Definition
A law supported by President Andrew Jackson, it forced all Native Americans living east of the Mississippi River to move west of the River. The Cherokee sued to keep their lands and won in Supreme Court (Worchester v. Georgia), but Jackson ignored the Court's decision.

Definition
This journey by the Cherokee took the Native Amerians from their homelands in the Appalachian Mountains and forced them to move west to Indian Territory (modern day Oklahoma) at gunpoint. About 25% of the Cherokee died on the 800 mile trip.

Definition
Among the brighest of all NAtive American tribes, the Cherokee sued the U.S. in Supreme Court for the lands in the Blue Ridge Mountains and won. However, the were forcibly removed anyway during the Trail of Tears.

The Seminole Indians of the Florida Everglades allowed escaped slaves to live among them. The U.S. attacked. The Seminole managed to fight off the U.S. attacks three times over a 40 year peroid in the mid-1800s.
