2. Gluteus medius

3. Gluteus minimus

4. Piriformis

5. Obturator internus

6. Superior gemellus

7. Inferior gemellus

8. Quadratus femoris

9. Tensor fasciae latae

Term
Gluteus maximus
Definition

O: posterior iliac crest, sacrum, coccyx & sacrotuberous ligament

I: IT band & gluteal tuberosity of femur

A: extension & lateral rotation of hip;

ABduction of hip (upper 1/3);

adduction of hip (lower 2/3);

posterior pelvic tilt

N: inferior gluteal nerve

B: inferior & superior gluteal arteries

Term
Gluteus medius
Definition

O: outer ilium (b/w anterior and post. gluteal lines)

I: greater trochanter

A: ABduction of hip;

flexion & medial rotation of hip (anterior fibers);

lateral rotation & extension of hip (posterior fibers);

stabilizes pelvis & prevents free limb from sagging during gait

N: superior gluteal nerve

B: superior gluteal artery

Term
Gluteus minimus
Definition

O: outer ilium (b/w anterior and inf. gluteal lines)

I: greater trochanter

A: ABduction of hip;

medial rotation & flexion of hip (anterior fibers);

lateral rotation & extension (posterior fibers);

stabilizes pelvis & prevents free limb from dropping during gait

N: superior gluteal nerve

B: superior gluteal artery

Term
Piriformis
Definition

O: anterior sacrum

I: greater trochanter

A: lateral rotation of hip;

ABduction of hip when thigh is flexed

N: nerve to piriformis

B: pelvic arteries, inferior gluteal arteries

Term
Obturator internus
Definition

O: obturator foramen & obturator membrane

I: greater trochanter

A: lateral rotation of hip joint;

ABduction of thigh when hip is flexed

N: nerve to obturator internus

B: pelvic arteries, inferior gluteal artery

Term
Superior & inferior gemellus
Definition

O: ischial spine (superior);

ischial tuberosity (inferior)

I: greater trochanter (medial surface)

A: Lateral rotation of hip;

ABduction of thigh when hip is flexed

N: Nerve to obturator internus

B: Inferior gluteal artery

Term
Quadratus femoris
Definition

O: ischial tuberosity (lateral aspect)

I: intertrochanteric crest of femur

A: lateral rotation of hip joint;

Adduction of thigh (weak action)

N: nerve to quadratus femoris

B: medial femoral circumflex artery, inferior gluteal artery

Term
Tensor fasciae latae
Definition

O: ASIS & anterior aspect of iliac crest

I: IT band (below greater trochanter)

A: flexion, ABduction & medial rotation of hip joint;

anterior pelvic tilt; tenses IT band to support femur on tibia during standing

N: superior gluteal nerve

B: lateral femoral circumflex artery (ascending branch), superior gluteal artery

Term
Put In Only Quarters
Definition

from medial to lateral...

Pudendal nerve

Internal pudendal nerve

Obturator internus, nerve to

Quadratus femoris, nerve to (lateral to piriformis muscle)
