Term
RAID 0
Definition
Function: Striping
Performance: Fast for reads and writes
Redundancy: None!
Space Efficiency: All the combined drives capacity is usable
Requirements: two hard drives
Use: High performance desktop applications where data can be lost
Term
RAID 1
Definition
Function: Mirroring
Performance: Limited
Requirements: Two Hard Drives ONLY
Benefit: Simple Redundancy
Space Efficiency: 50%
Use: Operating system, terminal server, Web server
Term
RAID 5
Definition
Function: Striping with Distributed Parity
Performance: Faster for reads, not as fast for writes
Requirements: Minimum three hard drives
Benefit: expandable and good space utilization
Space Efficiency: Lose one hard drive for parity
Use: High read I/O applications- file serving, exchange
Term
RAID 6
Definition
Function: Striping with double Parity
Performance: Good for reads, much slower with writes
Requirements: Minimum 4 hard drives
Benefit: Can lose 2 hard drives without losing data
Space Efficiency: Lose two hard drives for parity
Use: file serving and bulk storage
Term
RAID 10
Definition
Function: Nested RAID: RAID 1 (Mirroring) and RAID 0 (Striping)
Performance: Fastest for writes
Requirements: Minimum four hard drives. Must add drives in pairs.
Benefit: Can lose up to 1 drive from each RAID 1 pair
Space Efficiency: Only 50% of capacity is usable
Use: Performance applications like SQL
Term
RAID 50
Definition
Function: Nested RAID = RAID 5 sets with a RAID 0 Stripe
Performance: Good for reads. Not as fast for writes
Requirements: Minimum 6 hard drives
Benefit: Higher redundancy while maintain usable capacity
Drawback: Write performance penalty
Term
RAID 60
Definition
Function: Nested RAID = Two RAID 6 set with RAID 0 striping
Performance: Good for reads, much slower for writes
Requirements: Minimum eight hard drives
Benefit: Most redundant configuration
Drawback: Slowest at writes and lose up to 4 hard drives to parity
Use: File serving/archiving
Term
File/Print Servers
Definition
-Store file level data that other servers and clients within the network can access
-Can manage network printing for users within the network
-Most Tower and Rack Servers make ideal file servers
Term
Database Servers
Definition
-An application server that serves an application to users and stores block level data
-Examples are CRM and ERP tools
-Runs on SQL, Oracle, MySQL, db2
-T620, R720, R910 are ideal database servers
Term
Email Servers
Definition
-An application server that hosts email for users within a network
-MSFT Exchange is the example at Dell and at most companies
-R620 or R720 is an ideal email server
Term
Remote access servers
Definition
-Aka terminal servers (MSFT terminology) allows users to remotely access files and applications from outside the network
-Citrix is our example at Dell
-T310, T410, R310, R620, etc. are ideal remote access servers
Term
Backup Servers
Definition
-Leverage backup software to copy data from other servers (or clients) on the network
-Can storage data locally (disk backup) or push off externally to tape drives connected through PCIe cards
Term
Web Servers
Definition
-Store web pages and serve them up to the world wide web
-Don't require a lot of storage
-Need little redundancy when deployed behind web load balancers
-R210 is an ideal web server
Term
Domain Controller Servers
Definition
-Often run DHCP/DNS Services
-Often run Active Directory Services
-Serve as the privilege maker for a network. E.g. First_Last in the EMEA domain
-R410 is an ideal Domain Controller
Term
Virtual Host Servers
Definition
-Runs many guest server operating systems in a virtual state via a hypervisor that runs in between the bare hardware and the operating systems
-Examples are VMware, MSFT Hyper-V, Citrix Xen
-R810, or R720's are ideal virtual hosts
Term
DHCP
Definition
responsible for dynamically assigning IP addresses to clients who log into a network
Term
DNS
Definition
responsible for converting names into IP addresses. An example would be typing www.google.com into a web browser. The web browser would then ping a DNS server requesting the IP address associated with www.google.com
Term
Backup Server Definition
Definition
uses backup software (such as Dell's Appassure, Symantec Backup Exec, or CommVault) to copy data from the servers or clients and either place them on local disks (hard drives inside the backup server), or push them off to an external tape drive
Term
Domain Controller Definition
Definition
a server responsible that responds to security authentication requests (logging in, permissions, etc)
Term
Web Server Definition
Definition
Stores static web pages that are delivered to clients that request them
Term
File/Print Definition
Definition
has the primary purpose of providing a location for shared disk access, i.e. shared storage of computer files (such as documents, sound files, photographs, movies, images, databases, etc.) that can be accessed by the workstations that are attached to the same computer network.
Term
Email Server Definition
Definition
Servers as a post office for email. Software can be Exchange, Lotus, etc.
Term
Database Servers Definition
Definition
provides databases services for clients. Databases are collections of data that can be organized in various ways depending on purpose (i.e. a database that contains lists of rooms and features of rooms in a hotel) Examples of software: SQL, mySQL, and Oracle
Term
Remote Access Definition
Definition
Primarily responsible for providing servers or access to programs to users who are not physical connected to the internal LAN. Citrix and Microsoft Terminal services are examples of software that provide this server.
Term
Blue Tabs on server
Definition
Customer replace, but the system has to be powered down
Term
