Term
Cholelithiasis
Definition
gall bladder stones
incidental in animals that are chronically ill and not eating
seldomly cause obstruction in animals
Term
Viral Cholecystitis
Definition
Canine Distemper Virus
Infectious Canine Hepatitis
necrosis of gall bladder epithelium with secondary hemorrhage
Term
Bacterial Cholecystitis
Definition
Salmonella enteriditis in calves
migrates up biliary tract from gut
fibrinous exudate and edema of gall bladder wall
Term
Mucocoele
Definition
small breed dogs
gallbladder fills with mucous until it ruptures
hyperplasia of gall bladder epithelium produces abundant mucous
Term
Cystic Mucosal Hyperplasia
Definition
dogs, sheep
incidental finding
mucous production that does not rupture the gall bladder
Term
Incidental Lesions of the Pancreas
Definition
infiltration of mesenteric fat in interlobular interstitium makes it look atrophied
pancreatic calculi in ruminants
Term
Juvenile Pancreatic Atrophy
Definition
German Shepherds, Collies 6-12 months old
immune mediated apoptosis of pancreatic acinar cells
Term
Acute Pancreatitis
Definition
overweight sedentary female dogs
necrosis is major problem
regeneration can occur if there is no neutrophil infiltration
once fibrosis starts, connective tissue traps and squeezes down on remaining acinar cells
Term
Causes of Acute Pancreatitis
Definition
Three mechanisms:
Biliary Reflux due to obstruction on biliary outflow which activates pancreatic enzymes prematurely
Direct damage to acinar cells from trauma, toxin
Overstimulation of acinar cells causing zymogen to spread in pancreas and digest it with neutrophil infiltration
Term
Gross Features of Acute Pancreatitis
Definition
prominent interstitial edema in mild cases
hemorrhagic, pale foci of necrosis and saponified fat in severe cases
Term
Histopathology of Acute Pancreatitis
Definition
necrosis and inflammation beginning at edges of lobules or from ducts and moving out
fibrinous adhesions of abdominal organs
Term
Sequelae to Acute Pancreatitis
Definition
Abscesses
Adhesions
Intra-abdominal hemorrhage
Icterus due to extrahepatic cholestasis
Vascular damage, shock, DIC, pulmonary edema, myocardial depression
Term
Chronic Pancreatitis
Definition
from repeated acute pancreatitis or biliary reflux
interstitial and periductal lymphocytic infiltration and fibrosis
lumpy shrunken pancreas
Term
Causes of Chronic Pancreatitis
Definition
Cats- ascending bacterial infection
Sheep- zinc toxicosis
Horses- fluke migration and bacterial infection
Term
Nodular Hyperplasia
Definition
incidental finding in old dogs/cats
multifocal raised, smooth, uniform gray nodules
acinar cells are slightly enlarged but normal
Term
Pancreatic Adenoma
Definition
rare
large hyperplastic nodule with thin capsule
Term
Pancreatic Carcinoma
Definition
uncommon
solitary or multicentric
invasive and rapidly spreading
abundant fibrotic response so tumor adheres to anything in its vicinty
