Term
What is a common form of pancreatitis in dogs?
Definition
Acute pancreatic necrosis, the necrosis starts at the periphery of the lobule
Term
How do you diagnose pancreatatitis in dogs?
Definition
Clinical signs, lab findings and imaging
There isn't really a highly specific/sensitive test
Term
What CBC findings do you get in canine pancreatitis?
Definition
Polycythaemia, anaemia, leucocytois, lymphopaenia, eosinopaeina, monocytosis, low platlets
Term
What biochem findings come with canine pancreatitis?
Definition
Fasting hyperlipidemia, hyperprotienarmia, azotaemia, increased ALI and ALP, hyperglycaemis (stress, DM)
Term
What is malassimilation?
Definition
MAS= maldigestion or maladorbtion
Term
What is maldigestion?
Definition
Nutrients are not being digested, usualy due to exocrine pancreatic insufficency (EPI)
Term
What is maladsorbtion?
Definition
Nutrients are digested, but cannot b absrobed by the GIT wall, due to diffuse small intestine disesae
Term
What are the MAS clinical signs?
Definition
diarrhoea, weight loss, steatorrhea, always hungry
Term
When does EPI occur?
Definition
When 85% of the pancreas is no longer functioning. EPI is the main cause of maldigestion
Term
What can cause the loss of the pancreas?
Definition
Genetics, autoimmune disease, secondary to chronic pancreatitis, neoplasia
Term
What is the gold standard test for EPI?
Definition
Serum Trypsin Like Immunorectivity (Serum TLI)
Term
What are the advantges of TLI?
Definition
Stable, not affected by concurrent disease
The test is currently only available for cats and dogs
Term
What are some inportant considerations for the TLI test?
Definition
Do not run at a human lab - species specific
May be false neg with renal Dx
Requires 12hr fast
Increased TLI post dex treatment (wait 7 days)
Term
What can cause malabsorbtion?
Definition
SI bacterial overgrowth
Lympangectasia
Villous atrophy and loss
Mucosal necrosis
Diffuse SI disease
Term
What vitamins/mineral levels can be examined to localise the site of the lesion?
Definition
Folate and B12
Folate is abs proximal SI (jejunum), while B12 is abs in the illium
Term
What would you expect to find regarding folate and B12 with an overgrowth of bacteria?
Definition
The bacteria eat the B12 and produce folate, so and decrease in B12 and increase in folate
Term
WHat do you see in EPI regarding folate and cobalamin (B12)
Definition
Same as SIBO
Increase folate
Decrease B12
Term
Are B12 and folate sensitive test for EPI and SIBO?
Definition
No, these signs will be seen in any severe, diffuse SI disease
