-Sensory nerve

-Not visible, because they tear when brain is removed from skull

-Anterior brain

-Deliver information about smell

-Pass through cribriform foramina

Term

Optic (II)

Definition

-Sensory

-Transmit visual information from the retina of the eye to the diencephalon and mesencephalon

-Then transmitted to telencephalon as well

Term

Oculomotor (III)

Definition

-Motor

-Conrols eye movements, the eyelid, the pupils and the muscle of the ciliary body

-Sits on top of cerebral peduncles

Term

Trochlear (IV)

Definition

-Motor

-Controls eye movement

-In between cerebrum & cerebellum, very skinny

Term

Trigeminal (V)

Definition

-Both sensory & motor

-Transmits sensory information from the face

-Controls many of the muscles involved in chewing

-Stumpy, 3-branched nerve on pons

Term

Abducens (VI)

Definition

-Motor

-Controls eye movement

-Sits on top of "abs" inbetween pons & medulla

Term

Facial (VII)

Definition

-Both sensory & motor

-Transmits sensory information from the tongue to the thalamus

-Motor fibers from the pons control the muscles of facial expression, secretion of tears, saliva, and mucus

Term

Vestibulocochlear (VIII)

Definition

-Sensory

-Transmits information about hearing and equilibrium to brain

Term

Glossopharyngeal (IX)

Definition

-Both sensory & motor

-Helps control salivation and the muscles involved in swallowing and gagging

-Transmits sensory information from the tongue and outer ear, as well as changes in blood pressure ensed by cells in the carotid artery

Term

Vagus (X)

Definition

-Both sensory & motor

-Transmits information from the tongue, stomach, and abdominal organs as well as controlling swallowing and spech

-Helps regulate the heart, breathing, and digestion

Term

Accessory (XI)

Definition

-Motor

-Controls muscles in the pharynx as well as the sternocleidomastoid muscles and upper parts of trapezius

Term

Hypoglossal (XII)

Definition

-Motor

-Controls muscles in the tongue and floor of the mouth

-Looks like whiskers on medulla oblongata
