Term
CN I
Definition
Olfactory Nerve
Sensory: Smell
Origin: Receptors in olfactory mucosa of nasal cavity
Pathway: Cribiform foramina and olfactory bulb
Term
CN II
Definition
Optic Nerve
Sensory: Vision
Origin: Retina in the eye
Pathway: Optic canal to optic nerves meeting at optic chiasm to thalamus to occipital lobe
Term
CN III
Definition
Oculomotor Nerve
Motor: Move eye, elevate eyelid, constrict pupil, aid in adjustment for near vision
Origin: Mesencephalon
Pathway: Exits through superior orbital fissure to eye and eyelid
Term
CN IV
Definition
Trochlear Nerve
Motor: Moves eye inferior and laterally
Origin: Trochlear nucleus within mesencephalon
Pathway: Exits superior orbital fissure to superior oblique
Term
CN V
Definition
Trigeminal Nerve
Sensory: Touch, temperature, pain
Motor: Aids in mastication
Origin: Nucleus in pons
Term
CN VI
Definition
Abducens Nerve
Motor: Aids in abduction of eye
Origin: Pontein nucleus in pons
Pathway: Exits superior orbital fissure to lateral rectus
Term
CN VII
Definition
Facial Nerve
Sensory: Taste from anterior 2/3 of tongue
Origin: Nuclei within pons
Pathway: Exits tongue via chorida tympani branch to tiny foramen and geniculate ganglion, enter temporal bone via internal acoustic meatus then stylomastoid to supply musculature,
Motor: Aids in muscles of facial expression, increase in secretions of glands
Term
CN VIII
Definition
Vestibulocochlear Nerve
Sensory: Conducts impulses for equilibrium and hearing
Vestibular: Hair cells in inner ear
Cochlear: Cochlea of inner ear
Pathway: Enter cranial cavity through internal acoustic meatus to pons and medulla oblongata
Term
CN IX
Definition
Glossopharyngeal Nerve
Sensory: Sensation and taste for posterior 2/3 of tongue, chemoreceptor fibers to carotid bodies
Motor: innervates pharynx, increases secretion of parotid salivary gland
Sensory: Originate on taste buds, posterior 1/3 of tongue, carotid bodies
Motor: Nuclei of medulla oblongata
Pathway: Exit jugular foramen to pons and stylopharyngeus
Term
CN X
Definition
Vagus Nerve
Sensory: Visceral sensory from pharynx, larynx, heart, lungs, and most abs, General sensory for ext acoustic meatus, eardrum, pharynx
Motor: Innervates most pharynx and larynx and etc.
Origin: Motor nuclei in medulla oblongata
Pathway: Leaves jugular foramen to neck, thorax, abdomen
Term
CN XI
Definition
Accessory Nerve
Motor: Cranial root- pharynx, Spinal root- Innervates trapezius and sternocleidomastoid
Cranial root: Motor nuclei in medulla oblongata
Motor root: Motor nuclei in spinal cord
Pathway: Exit jugular foramen to travel with vagus or spinal goes to sternocleidomastoid and trapezius
Term
CN XII
Definition
Hypoglossal Nerve
Motor: Intervates intrinsic and extrinsic tongue
Origin: Hypoglossal nucleus in medulla oblongata
Pathway: Leaves cranium to hypoglossal canal to inferior surface of mandible and tongue
