Term
CN 1 Olfactory final locations
Definition
  • Primary olfactory cortex
    • temporal lobe
  • Limbic system
    • emotional response
Term
CN 2 Optic Tract
Definition
  • Fibers from optic chiasm --> lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of thalamus
  • 10% of visual info travels to superior colliculus and hypothalamus rather than the LGN
Term
CN 2 Optic Radiations (thalamus --> visual cortex)
Definition
  • Fibers carrying info from the superior visual fields travel in the inferior optic radiations through the temporal lobe prior to heading posteriorly to the lower bank of the calcarine fissure in the primary visual cortex
    • Meyer's Loop
  • Fibers carrying info from the inferior visual fields travel in the superior optic radiations through the parietal lobe to the upper bank of the calcarine fissure in the primary visual cortex
Term
CN 3 Oculomotor Nuclei
Definition
  • Nuclei in midbrain tegmentum (level of superior colliculus)
  • Exit at interpeduncular fossa
Term
CN 4 Troclear Nucleus
Definition
  • Nucleus in midbrain tegmentum (at level of inferior colliculus)
  • Only CN that exits on the dorsal side!
    • exits at junction of midbrain and pons
  • Only CN where all fibers cross!
    • Left nucleus controls right eye, but left nerve controls left eye
    • Right nucleus controls left eye, but right nerve controls right eye
Term
CN 5 Trigeminal Motor Nucleus
Definition
  • Voluntary motor neuron cell bodies for control of jaw movement in the the motor nucleus of CN 5
    • Mid-Rostral Pons
Term
CN 5 Trigeminal 1st order cell bodies
Definition
  • Cell bodies of 1st order neurons in Trigeminal Ganglion except proprioception
    • Mid Pons
  • Proprioception 1st order cell bodies in lateral midbrain mesencepalic nucleus (exception to the rule that sensory neuron cell bodies are located outside the CNS)
Term
CN 5 Trigeminal 2nd Order Cell Bodies
Definition
  • Discriminative Touch
    • principal/main/chief sensory nucleus in Pons
  • Pain, Temp, Crude Touch
    • spinal trigeminal nucleus in Caudal Medulla

  • Axons for conscious sensation cross midline and project to thalamus via Ventral Trigeminothalamic Tract (TTT)
Term
CN 5 Trigminal 3rd Order Cell Bodies
Definition
  • Cell bodies of 3rd order neurons in the ventral posteromedial nucleus (VPM) of the thalamus
  • 3rd order neurons project to the face region of the primary somatosensory cortex
Term
CN 6 Abducens Nucleus
Definition
  • Nucleus located medially in the tegmentum of Caudal Pons
Term
CN 7 Facial Motor Nucleus
Definition
  • Voluntary motor nucleus in Caudal Pons
  • Parasympathetic nuclei in Caudal Pons
Term
CN 7 Facial Special Sense 2nd Order Neurons
Definition
  • 2nd Order neurons project to VPM of the thalamus bilaterally
Term
CN 7 Facial Somatosensory Cell Bodies
Definition
  • 1st order cell bodies in the facial ganglion
  • 2nd order neurons in spinal nucleus of CN 5
Term
CN 8 Vestibular Portion
Definition
  • Info from vestibular apparatus goes to vestibular nuclei (caudal pons and rostral medulla), to the cerebellum, and to the reticular formation
Term
CN 8 Cochlear Portion
Definition
  • Displacement of endolymph --> bending of hair cells --> depolarization of neurons in CN 8 -->cochlear nuclei in caudal pons at junction of pons and medulla --> 2nd order neurons ascend bilat
Term
CN 9 Glossopharyngeal Sensory Nuclei
Definition
  • Somatosensory
    • 2nd order neurons in spinal nucleus of CN 5
  • Special Sensory
    • 2nd order neurons in nucleus in rostral medulla
Term

    • Rostral Medulla
Term
CN 11 Accessory Nuclei
Definition
  • Portion of nucleus in lateral aspect of ventral horn C1-C5
  • Axons exit spinal cord between the dorsal and ventral roots, travel superiorly outside of CNS, go up through the foramen magnum into the skull, join with the cranial portion, then exit the skull to the trapezius and SCM
Term
