Howell-Jolly Bodies

*Inclusion Body- Inside the RBC

*Are nuclear reminants

*bodies remain in focus with the rest of cell

*could indicate an increase in RBC production, or a spleen issue

*N(cats/horses/dogs)=0.5-1%

 Heinz Bodies

(Erythrocyte Refractile)

*Aggregates of denatured hemaglobin

*Oxidative injury agents toxic to RBCs

*Causes Heinz body hemolytic anemia

*Onion/aspirin toxicity *clear/light blue color

*N(1%)/cats=10%

Eccentrocytes

("Blister Cell")

*Eccentric displacement of hemoglobin (opposing sides of the RBC membrane have fused due to oxidative injury)

*Related to heinz bodies

*larger then heinz bodies

Hemolglobin Crystals

*Unaware of signifigance

*common in sheep, goats

*seen in sick cats 

*seen in collies with neutropenia

 Siderotic Granules

(siderocytes)/(pappenheimer)

*Iron granules inside RBC

*impaired hemoglobin synthesis

*can be indicating lead toxicity/ hemolytic anemia

*use a prussian blue stain to confirm (stains iron dark)

Basophilic Stippling

(Punctate basophilia)

*could mean degenerative changes in cytoplasmic RNA

*see in strong regenerative anemia/ Lead poisoning

*not as large as HJ bodies

*common in immature RBCs of ruminants
