What are the 4 threats to causal validity in classical experiments

Definition
  1. Internal validity
  2. Construct validity
  3. External validity
  4. Statistical conclusion validity
Term

Key Concepts

What are some of the threats to Internal validity with explanation of each?

Definition
  • History - events that occur between the pre and post test that might effect the overall results
  • Maturation - growth and intellectual change might have an effect on the experiment.
  • Testing - the fact that your testing a person might effect how they respond.
  • Statistical regression - am I only studying the extreme groups?
  • Selection bias - who decides to volunteer for my study will effect my results.
  • experimental mortality - people may drop out of the study.
Term

Key Concepts

explain what threats to Internal validity means in short

Definition
The problem of threats to internal validity refers to the possibility that conclusions drawn from experimental results may ot accurately reflect what went on in the experiment itself.
Term

Key Concepts

Explain what threats to Construct validity means in short

Definition
construct validity is concerned with with generalizing from our observations in an experiment to actual causal processes in the real world.
Term

Key Concepts

Explain what threats to external validity means in short

Definition
Do results from experiments in one setting appear in other settings
Term

Key Concepts

Explain what threats to Statistical Conclusion validity means

Definition
Large samples of subjects, up to a point, are more representative of the target population than a smaller sample.
