Term
What function does the integumentary system do and what is it composed of
Definition

The integumentary system functions to keep the external out and internal in (a covering), waterproofing, maintain body temperature, synthesizing vitamin D & housing sensory receptors

It is composed of three things: skin, nails, and hair

Term
Name the three layers of skin
Definition
Epidermis, dermis & hypodermis
Term
Name the four types of cells in the epidermis
Definition
Keratinocytes, melanocytes, Langerhan's cells & Merkel cells
Term
Name the five layers of the epidermis
Definition
Stratum corneum, stratum lucidum (thick), stratum granulosum (lamenated granules), stratum spinosum (Langerhan's cells/ dendritic cells) & stratum basale (Merkel cells/ melanocytes)
Term
What provides skin color
Definition
Melanocytes produce melanin that provides skin color and protects against UV rays
Term
Describe some characteristics of the dermis
Definition
It is highly vascularized, contains hair follicles, sweat & oil glands, innervated & flexible and strong
Term
What is the sweat gland called
Definition
Eccrine sweat gland
Term
What is the hypodermis mainly composed of
Definition
Adipose tissue
Term
What are oil glands called
Definition
sabaceous gland
Term
Where is the arrector pili muscle located; epidermis, dermis or hypodermis
Definition
Dermis!
Term
Where is the papillary layer located
Definition
In between the epidermis and dermis layers, ridge looking layer
Term
Ther dermal papillary layer contains
Definition

collagen, elestic fibers and is vascularized

But some aso contain: Meissner receptors, capillary layers & free nerve endings

Term
Where are friction ridges found and what are they made of
Definition

Palms and soles of the hands and feet

They are made of epidermal ridges and dermal ridges

Term
In which of the five layers of the skin are germinal cells located
Definition
stratum basale
Term
What are pacinian corpuscles and where are they located
Definition
Pacinian corpuscles sense pressure and are located in the reticular layer of the dermis
Term
What is another name for the hypodermis and what is its major function
Definition
also called the superficial fascia and functions to absorp shock and insulate
Term
The sweat glands are located in the dermis, what are the two types of sweat glands
Definition

Eccrine sweat glands (very primative)-respond to elevations in temperature and emotional responsive

Apocrine sweat glands- become active during puberty

Term
What do eccrine glands look like and where are they found
Definition
Eccrine glands are coiled and tubular found in the dermis
Term
Give some description of the acidity and composition of eccrine sweat
Definition
Slightly acidic (pH 4-6) and is composed of: water, salt, vitamin C, antibodies, dermicidin & metabolic wastes
Term

Give some description on where (pheromones) apocrine sweat glands are located and what they secrete

also what are they two modified apocrine glands called

Definition

Largely located at the apogential & axillary areas

The secrete mostly protein and fatty acids into the hair follicle region

ceruminous- ear wax

mammary gland- milk

Term
What type of gland is a sabaceous gland and how does it work
Definition

A sabaceous gland secretes sebum-an oil that makes hair waterproof and pliable

Its gland works like a holocrine gland- cells multiply and burst!

Are alveolar shaped

Term
What is the composition of hair and hair follicle
Definition
Keratinized cells-mostly dead
Term
Name the two types of hair
Definition
Vellus and terminal (coarse)
Term
Black hair has what and blonde hair has what
Definition

eumelanin-black

pheomelanin- blonde

Term
What is alopecia
Definition
Hair thinning- not replaced as fast as it is shed
Term
Name the three steps in tissue repair
Definition

Inflammation: capillaries dilate, WBCs, antibodies & clotting factors seep into wound

Organization: fibroblasts release collagen to bridge tissue gap and restore vascularity

Regeneration: the fibrosed area and epithelium has regenerated

Term
How do wrinkles occur
Definition
The support of collagen under the skin decreases as we age, stress and smoke
