Definition

The first English Colonists set up local governments  based on those they had in England. Some of the offices they established  are still present. Such as: the offices of sheriff, coroner, assessor, and justice  of the peace, the grand jury, counties, townships, and several others.

The government is not all-powerful and each  individual has certain rights the government cant take away. Deeply  rooted in the English belief and practiced by the time the first English ships  reached America.

The government should serve the will of the  people. This idea arose the idea that the people should have a voice in  deciding what government should and should not do. With this type of  government came the notion, " government of, by, and for the people."

In every state it was made clear that the sovereign people  hold certain rights that the government must respect at all times. Seven of  the new constitutions contained a bill of rights, setting out the "unalienable  rights" held by the people.
