Cards

Term
Digestion of large food molecules provides resources for what 2 functions of the body?
Definition

Protein Synthesis

and

Cellular respiration

Term
Trace the path of blood through the heart.
Definition

Blood enters the heart through from the Vena Cava into the right Atrium.

Then from the right atrium to the right ventricle through the tricuspid valve.

Then from the right ventricle to the lungs through the pulmonary valve

Then into the left atrium from the pulmonary vein

then into the from the left atrium to the left ventricle through the mitralv valve

lastly from the left ventricle to the aorta via the aortic valve

Term

What causes the first sound during a heart beat?

What causes the second?

Definition

The first is caused by the closing of the Atrio-ventricular valves.

The second is caused by the closing of the semilunar valves

Term

What enzyme does saliva contain?

What does it digest?

What is the optimum pH at which it functions?

Definition

Salivary Amylase

which

Digests Starch (a polysaccharide) into maltose (a disaccaride).

Salvary Amylase works best at a pH between 7 and 8

Term

Why are enzymes important in digestion?

Definition
They speed chemical digestion until it is fast enough to sustain life.
Term

What is happening during a ventricular systole?

Diastole?

Definition

During a Ventrivular systole, the ventricles are contracting, the semilunar valves are open and the A-V valves are closed.

During a ventricular diastole, the ventricles are relaxing.

Term
What provides the Heart with Oxygen?
Definition
The coronary arteries
Term
What factors influence heart rate?
Definition

Epinepherine,

miogenic muscle contraction,

the sino-atrial node

Term
What structural characteristics do veins have that adapt them to their function?
Definition
valves, weak tunica medius
Term
What are the 5 primary components of blood?
Definition
plasma, phagocytes, erythrocytes, platelets, and leukocytes
