Term
Dermatome vs. Myotome
Definition
Dermatome: Cutaneous innervation from specific spinal segment
Myotome: Muscular innervation, usually from 2+ spinal segments
Term
Dermatomes covered in upper limb
Definition
Pre-Brachial Plexus (C3,C4) and Brachial Plexus (C5,C6,C7,C8,T1)

Important Note:
If you keep in mind the order from LATERAL --> MEDIAL of the brachial plexus branches, it becomes easier to understand the Dermatomes:
Mnemonic:
My Aunt Raped My Uncle
Musculocutaneous, Axillary, Radial, Median, Ulnar
(C5 --> T1)
Term
Upper shoulder
Definition
C3 and C4 (Supraclavicular nerves)
Term
Mid/Lower shoulder
Definition
C5 (Axillary nerve)
Term
Lateral ARM + Posterior Arm+Forearm
Definition
C5 via Radial Nerve
Term
Radial (lateral) forearm
Definition
C6 via Musculocutaneous nerve
Term
Thumb
Definition
C6 via Radial nerve
Term
Index finger (1st finger)
Definition
C6 via Median nerve (palmar) and Radial n (dorsum)
Term
Middle Finger (2nd finger)
Definition
C7 via Median Nerve
Term
Ulnar (Medial) Hand
Definition
C8 via Ulnar nerve
Term
Medial Arm and Forearm
Definition
T1 via Medial brachial cutaneous nerve (Medial Arm) and Medial AnteBrachial cutaneous nerve (Medial forearm)
*Called Medial b/c comes from Medial Cord
Term
Myotomes of Upper limb will be the next topic. Recall that Myotomes can have 2 or more spinal segments, but single segments will be presented
Definition
On Definition side,
1) Myotome level
2) Resistance Test
3) Nerve involved
Term
Deltoid muscle
Definition
1. C5
2. Have Arms in 90 deg abduction --> Examiner push down and have patient resist via ABDUCTION
3) Axillary nerve
Term
Flexors of Arm (Biceps, Brachialis, Brachioradialis)
Definition
1) C6
2) "flex arm against pull"
Patient: arm flexed, Examiner pull and have patient resist.
3) Musculocutaneous nerve and Radial n
Term
Wrist extensors (E. carpi radialis longus/brevis, E. carpi ulnaris)
Definition
1) C6
2) Patient extends wrist against resistance
3) Radial nerve
Term
Triceps Brachii
Definition
1) C7
2) Full abduction and flexion of shoulder (tricep dumbell style). Patient resists pressure to see if triceps are working
3) Radial nerve
Term
Finger Flexors (F. digitorum superficialis/profundi)
Definition
1) C8
2) Flex fingers against resistance
3) Median n (lateral half) and Ulnar n (medial half)
Term
Adduct or Abduct fingers
Definition
1) C8/T1
2) Abduct/Adduct against R
3) Ulnar nerve
Term
Notice general top bottom pattern (flip card)
Definition
Top muscles --> Bottom muscles
C5 myotome ---> T1 Myotome
Generally!

Don't forget the C6 deviation from this rule (does flexor arm muscles but also wrist extensors)
