Term

Neonatal Isoerythrolysis

Definition
a disease found in kittens and foals. It occurs when the mother has antibodies against the blood type of the newborn which they get through the mothers colostrum
Term

catagories of transfusion reactions

Definition

Acute immunologic

acute non-immunologic

delayed immunologic

delayed non-immunologic

Term

acute immunologic reaction

Definition
when the recipient plasma has antibodies to the donar RBC antigens, the dontated cells are rapidly destroyed within 1 to 2 hours. causes agglutination  and hemolysis. recipient may die.
Term
Delayed immunologic reaction
Definition
animal developes antibodies to donor RBC. shortens life of RBCs from transfusion. happens days after. this usually occurs after the 2nd transfusion and it is not usually life threatening.
Term

Acute non-immunologic reaction

Definition

happens quickly or even during a transfusion. can be caused by air embolism, blood clot embolism, bacterial contamination of blood product. the recipient may die.

Term

Delayed non-immunologic reaction

Definition

infection of recipient of contagious didease from donor.

Term
canine donor screening usually includes which diseases
Definition
lyme disease, ehrlichia canis, rocky mountain spotted fever, babesia canis and babesia gibsonii, heartworm disease
Term
feline donor screening usually at least includes?
Definition
FeLV, FIV, FIP and mycoplasma hemofelis
Term

blood type antigens

Definition
  • Proteins and lipids on surface of RBCs
  • antibodies to blood group antigens in animals plasma can stimulate severe immune response to destroy the RBCs containing those antigens
Term

Term
which type of blood should be used if blood typing is not possble or not done in canine
Definition
DEA 1.1 negative
Term
what happens if DEA 1.1 pos blood is given to a dog that is DEA 1.1 neg?
Definition
the transfused RBCs have a shorter life than normal.
Term
how many days after DEA 1.1 pos blood is givin to 1.1 neg dog does the RBC count start a rapid drop?
Definition
10-14 days post-transfusion
Term
types of canine cross matching
Definition
major and minor
Term
major crossmatching
Definition
donor RBCs mixed with recipent plasma
Term
Minor crossmatching
Definition
donor plasma and recipient RBCs

The universal recipient in cats
Definition
AB
Term
the universal donor in cats
Definition
none
Term
alloantibody
Definition
and antibody produced by one individual that reacts with alloantigens of another individual of the same species
Term
94% of DSH and DLH cats in US are type???
Definition

Term
type AB blood has antibodies against which blood type
Definition
none against A or B (universal donor)
Term
what is the percentage of US cats that have type AB blood
Definition
≤1%
Term
11-20% of abyssinian, birman himalayan persian, somali, sphinx and scottish fold are type??
Definition
B
Term
what happens when type B cat is given type A blood?
Definition
severe acute reaction.. often death results
Term
if type A cat is given type B blood the reaction is
Definition
less severe then if B cat is given A blood
Term
true or false? it is ok for a cat to have a transfusion with out being crossmatched
Definition
FALSE! all cats must have a crossmatch done before ALL transfusion
Term
how quickly can a kitten die with feline neonatal isoerythrolysis (NI)
Definition
hours to days
Term
ways to prevent neonatal isoerythrolysis (NI)
Definition
  • dont use type B female cats for breeding
  • be present at queening
  • remove kittens before nursing
  • feed milk replacer for first 24-72 hrs
  • hae them foster on type A queen (lots of planning
