Term
BLOOD GROUPS AND TRANSFUSIONS
Definition
Early attempts to transfer blood from one person to another produced varied results. Sometimes the recipient improved. Other time the recipeint suffererd a blood reaction in which the red blood cells clumped, obstructing vessels and producing great pain and organ damage.
Term
BLOOD GROUPS AND TRANSFUSIONS COUNTINUED
Definition

Eventually scientist determined blood is of different types

Only certain combinations of blood types are compatible

Term
ANTIGENS AND ANTIBODIES
Definition

Aggulatination-clumbing of RBC's, following a transfusion reaction. Due to reaction between:

-Red blood cells surface molecules: antigens

-Proteins: Antibodies

-Anxiety, Breathing difficulty, facial flushing, headache, severe pains

-Avoiding the mixture of certain kinds of antigens and antibodies prevents adverse transfusion reactions

Term
ABO BLOOD GROUP
Definition

-Based on: presence of two major antigens on red blood cell membranes. -Antigen A and -Antigen B

RBC's have one of 4 antigen combinations on their membrane

-Based on inheritance only A, only B, Both A and B, or Neither A or B

Term
ABO BLOOD GROUP COUNTINUED
Definition

Only antigen A has type A blood. Only Antigen B has type B blood. Both antigen A and B is type AB blood. Neither antigen A nor B has type O blood.

In the US, the most common ABO blood types are O (47%) and A (41%). AB is 3%.

Term
Antibodies are synthesized about 2-8 months following birth
Definition

-Persons with type A blood have antibody anti-B

-Persons with type B blood have antibody anti-A

-Those with type AB blood have neither antibody

-Tose with type O have both antibody anti-A and antibody anti-B
