Term
joint/ articulation
Definition
junction of two or more bones
Term
suture
Definition
Bones tightly connected by either fibrous tissue or cartilage
• No movement possible
• Example: skull sutures
Term
symphyses
Definition
• Pad of fibrocartilage between bones
• Pad cushions the joint and allows limited movement in response to compression, tension, or torsion
• Examples: pubic symphysis, intervertebral discs
Term
synjovial joints- most movable joints
Definition
• Joint cavity enclosed by a fibroelastic joint capsule. The capsule includes: (1) an outer, tough,
fibrous layer and (2) an inner synovial membrane that secretes synovial fluid into the cavity. Synovial
fluid functions as a lubricant.
• Articular cartilage covers (and cushions) the ends of bones
• Ligaments span the joint to reinforce and strengthen the joint
• Muscles spanning the joint also help to reinforce the joint
Term
ball and socket joint- shoulder and hip
Definition
• Rounded head of one bone fits into the cuplike cavity of another
• Wide range of movements possible, e.g. abduction, adduction, flexion, extension, medial and
lateral rotation.
Term
hinge joint- elbow and kneww
Definition
• Convex surface of one bone fits into concave surface of another
• Primarily bending movements, i.e., flexion and extension
Term
lateral flexion
Definition
lateral movement of trunk in coronal plane
Term
abduction
Definition
lateral movement of a body part away from the midline
Term
adduction
Definition
medial movement of a body part toward the midline
Term
Rotation
Definition
limb segment pivots around the longitudinal axis of the limb
Term
medial rotation
Definition
rotation of the anterior surface of a limb medially
Term
lateral rotation
Definition
rotation of the anterior surface of a limb laterally
Term
supination
Definition
rotation of forearm and hand laterally so the palm faces anteriorly
Term
pronation
Definition
rotation of forearm and hand medially so the palm faces posteriorly
Term
eversion
Definition
rotation of forearm and hand medially so the palm faces posteriorly
Term
inverstion
Definition
movement of the sole of the foot medially
Term
elevation
Definition
movement of a body part superiorly (e.g. scapula, mandible)
Term
depression
Definition
movement of a body part inferiorly (e.g. scapula, mandible)
Term
dorsiflexion
Definition
movement of the superior surface of foot toward the leg
Term
plantar flexion
Definition
movement of the sole of foot inferiorly (“pointing toes”)
Term
protraction
Definition
movement of body part anteriorly (e.g. scapula, mandible)
Term
retraction
Definition
movement of a body part posteriorly (e.g. scapula, mandible)
