Term
The new moldboard plow
Definition
Created by the Franks and Anglo-Saxons, it was more advanced than the scratch plow because it was curved in a way that allowed it to turn over the soil instead of just breaking it up.
Term
Long Acre System
Definition
Fields laid out the same year by using a moldboard plow to pile the soil toward the center creating shallow trenches between each "plowland" and the next. Allows for efficient drainage of flat lands.
Term
Rye Cultivation
Definition
Rye was grown in tundra areas where wheat could not grow. Rye matured faster and became the staple crop in northwestern Europe. Rye produced less grain, but required the same amount of seed. This meant rye cultivators could support fewer landlords and townspeople, making the civilization unable to flourish.
Term
Franks and Germans as Invaders
Definition
Unlike the Visigoth and Vandal invaders who set themselves up as landlords and left the hard work of the field to the people already there, the Franks and Germans cleared the forests and set up their fields in land which had not been cultivated before.
