what was the purpose of the Daka system?
Definition
During the Tokugawa period (1600-1868), Buddhism was bureaucratised and it's house-holdtemple relationship (danka seido) was institutionalised in the Shogunate's attempt to eradicate the threat of Christianity and consequently the spread of the west. Whilst further legitimising its power over the whole nation. Naturally, religious practice was significantly affected under the bakufu's newfound control.

Definition
The bureaucratisisation of the Buddhism becamse essensial for the Tokugawa shogunate to proclaim its control over the entire nation.

Definition
The monks were oblidged to take details of the populace. In essence, monks became more like civil servants, eventually recording statistics such as births, deaths, marridges, adoptions and occupations from 1671.

Definition

Temples offered a place to conduct bussiness and store treasures and documents, issued bills and exchanged and lent money. This began in the onin war but played a vital role in the Tokugawa economy.

Those who did not affiliate with a temple and continued to hold christian beleifs were severely punished, or even executed.

Definition
The christians saw it as a glorious death to die for their religion (in a way like Jesus) and thus the Bakufu resorted to rewarding those who reported christians and holding them in prison instead.

Definition
After making it compulsory to be affiliated with the temple during the national seclusion, it became necessary to have a temple situated in every village to support the significant increase of danka members. This saw temples soar from around 13,000 in the Kamakura period to ocer 469,000 at one period during Tokugawa.
