Definition
1791-National Bank, proposed by Hamilton. Central depository for federal gov't, and had authority to issue currency.
I: gave more power to the federal gov't and helped unify.

Whiskey Rebellion
Definition
Protests in 1794 by Western Pennsylvania farmers resisting payment of a federal tax on whiskey. The uprising was forcibly suppressed when President George Washington called an army of 15,000 troops to the area, where they encountered almost no resistance.
I: Showed americans displeasure for excise taxes, and also how Washington wasn't afraid to show force.

Kentucky & Virginia Resolution
Definition
Statements penned by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison to mobilize opposition to the Alien & Sedition Acts, which they argued were unconstitutional. Jefferson's statement (Kentucky Resolution)suggested that states should have the right to declare , null, and void congressional acts that they deemed unconstitutional. Madison produced a more temperate resolution, but most Americans rejected such an extreme defense of states' rights.
I: Was the peaceful refuting of the Alien & sedition act that tried to give states more rights, and if passed, could have collapsed federal power over the states.

Battle of Fallen Timbers
Definition
American General Anthony Wayne, crushed native american resistance in the Northwest territory that had become a problem. Ended with Treaty of Greensville.
I: The final battle that ended the annoyance of native Americans attacking american settlers and discouraging them from moving out there.

Pinckneys Treaty
Definition
(Treaty of San Lorenzo) October 27, 1795. Was a treaty with Spain.
I: Opened Mississippi river so deposits could be made in New Orleans without an extra fee. Also a secure southern boundary drawn on the 31st parallel (Top of Florida line). and they promised to stay out of native american affairs. This made Pinckney a federalist hero.

I: There federalist papers and they were crucial in getting the constitution ratified.

Definition
Tax on imports. Hamilton was in favor of these.
I: Was used to build industry in the Americas, and help the federal gov't with debt payments.

Definition
John Adams was elected president with Thomas Jefferson as vice-president. There was some manipulating to try and get Pinckney elected, but when it was found out, the votes went to Adams.
I: The second president was elected, and it was the first new leader of the America since the before the revolution.

Definition
Jefferson won. Was originally a tie between Jefferson and Burr, but Jefferson came out on top after a Burr vote was withdrawn.
I: Showed the end of Adams presidency, and promoted Jefferson to president.

Jefferson was reelected president. Beat only contender (Pinckney) by a landslide.
I: Jefferson remained as president.

Definition
3rd president of America, and Adams vice president. Involved in America's politics since revolution. Heavy federalist that believed states should have power, agriculture, and common people.
I:Opposed Hamilton, was in favor of sticking with France and supporting Republicanism. Hated Washington, and was for strict interpretation of constitution. A Founding Father.

Definition
Third vice president with Jefferson.
I: Always on the ballot, but never won. Also killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel.

A social and political revolution in France that toppled the Monarchy. (1789-1799)
I:Brought arguing to the american gov't as to if they should support them or not, since France supported them and thy brought the new trend of overthrowing monarchy.

Definition
A diplomatic incident in which American peace commissioners sent to France by Pres. Adams in 1797 were insulted with bribe demands from their French counterparts, dubbed X, Y, and Z, in American Newspapers.
I:Heightened war fever against France. And showed the end of any possible alliance/neutrality with France.

Definition
1796- speech by G.W. announcing that he wasn't going for a third term. Stressed Federalist interests and advised to avoid political factions and foreign entanglement that could sacrifice American security.
I:His resignation, that he could give up power, and that it was time for the early republic to move on from him and from relying on him.

I: Also forced the last British soldiers to leave the Ohio area. Opened up the Northwest territory as now safer for Americans to move to and settle.

Secretary of Treasury during Washington's office. Wanted the rich to have power, and pro-american industry. Admired Britain.
I: Wanted to consolidate debts, national bank, excise taxes, protective tariffs, and foreign neutrality. Washington sided with him many times.

I: Part of George Washington's first cabinet which was fairly small.

Definition
1794-settle grievances and avoid war w/ Britain.British surrendered forts on U.S. grounds, but failed to realize key diplomatic goals and brought protest to Americans.
I: Avoided war with Britain and showed weakness because Britain defined the conditions of neutrality. This also angered the French because they were siding w/ Britain.

I: MAde people re-evaluate the rights that the state governments actually had.

I: Showed the end of the American-French alliance that had formed during the American Revolution.
