They were originally an anti-black group. In the 1920's they expanded their "do not like" list to: Catholics, Jews, Pacifists, Communists, Internationalists, Revolutionists, Bootleggers, gambling, adultery, and birth control.

Definition
Scientists were butting heads over Darwin's theory of evolution. Fundamentalists believed in a literal following of the bible and were numerous in the South. In Tennessee a law was passed banning the teaching of evolution and John T. Scopes violated this.
