Cards

Term
Arch of aorta
Definition

Left recurrent laryngeal nerve found here.

Term
Coarctation of the aorta
Definition
Term
Brachiocephalic trunk
Definition

Branches into R common carotid and R subclavian arteries

Term
Ligamentum arteriosum
Definition

Connects the pulmonary trunk to the descending aorta.

Blood flowed from R ventricle into aorta via this so could bypass pulmonary trunk since fetus didn't need oxygenated blood.

In embryo: Ductus arteriosum

Patent Ductus Arteriosus: Failure to close, oxy blood bypasses lungs, heart is working too much. Leads to heart failure.

Term
Left Vagus Nerve
Definition

Branches into L recurrant laryngeal nervem and esophageal plexus.

Contains Sympathetic, parasympathetic and somatic sensory fibers.

Term
Right recurrent vagus
Definition
Hooks around right subclavian artery to return to
Term
Oblique Sinus
Definition
Space in pericardium behind left ventricle.
Term
Transverse Sinus
Definition
Space in pericardium behind aorta and pulmonary trunk.
Term

Right Coronary Artery

(RCA)

Definition

Runs in atrioventricular sulcus.

Branches supply the right atrium and ventricle.

Branches into SA node, Marginal artery (Supplies the R. ventricle)and Posterior descending artery (supplies AV node).

Term
Posterior Descending (Interventricular) Artery
Definition

Branches to the interventricular septum and anastomoses with the circumflex branch of the L. coronary.

Determines whether heart is L or R dominant.

Term

Left Coronary Artery

(LCA)

Definition

Divides into anterior descending (LAD) and circumflex artery.

Term
Left anterior descending artery (LAD)
Definition

Branch of LCA.

Runs in interverticular sulcus.

Supplies atrioventricular bundle and bundle braches.

Term
Circumflex Artery
Definition

Branch of LCA.

Gives off the left marginal artery to supply the lateral wall of the L ventricle.

Term
Great cardiac vein
Definition

Runs with LAD.

Anterior of heart

Term
Middle cardiac vein
Definition
Runs along with Posterior interventricular branch.
Term
Coronary Sinus
Definition

All venous return from 3 cardiac veins drains into this, which then drains directly into R. atrium.

Embryology: Left horn of sinus venosus.

Term
Fossa Ovalis
Definition

Oval shaped depression in the R. atrium.

Fusion of septum primum and septum secundum to form atrial septum.

ASD (atrial septal defects) - incomplete fusion. Usually of little clinical signif if hole is small

Term
Aorticopulmonary septum
Definition
By growth of this the truncus arteriosus divides into the aorta (posterior) and pulmonary trunk (anterior).
Term
Moderator Band
Definition

Connects interventricular septum to base of the anterior papillary muscle in r. ventricle.

Contains specialize cardiac myocyte cells that are part of the conducting system.

Term
Sinus venosous
Definition
L. horn forms coronary sinus.
