Term
Latissimus Dorsi
Definition
Location: Broad, flat muscle lower back
Origin: spinous processes of T7 to the sacrum via the thoracolumbar fascia
Insertion: intertubercular groove of the humerus
Action: adduct, extension and medial rotation of the humerus at the GH joint
Term
Levator Scapulae
Definition
Location: deep to the trapezius muscle and superior to the rhomboids
Origin: transverse processes of the upper cervical vertebrae
Insertion: superior angle of the scapula
Action: Elevation and downward rotation of the scapula
Term
Rhobmoid Major
Definition
Location: deep to the Traps and inferior to the levator scapulae muscle
Origin: spinous process of T2- T5
Insertion: medial scapula
Action: retract scapula
Term
Rhomboid Minor
Definition
Location: deep to the traps and inferior to the levator scapulae muscles
Origin: spinous process of C7- T1

Insertion: medical scapula
Action: retracts scapula
Term
Trapezius
Definition
Location: most superficial muscle, triangle shaped with 3 fiber orientations
Origin: occipital bone, nuchal ligament and spinous processes of C7- T12 vertebrae
Insertion: spine of the scapula, acromion, and lateral 3rd of a clavicle
Action: elevates, retracts, and depresses and upward rotate the scapula
Term
erector Spinae
Definition
Location: 3 separate muscles, iliocostalis, longissimus, Spinalis
Origin: iliac crest, sacrum, ribs; thoracodorsal fascia, transverse and cervical vertebrae; spinous process of vertebrae
Insertion: thoracolumbar fascia , ribs, cervical vertebrae; temporal bone; spinous process of vertebrae
Action: bilaterally, extend vertebral column, laterally extend column
Term
Suboccipital Muscles (info)
Definition
Location: inferior to occipital, deep to the semispinalis capitis muscle
Attachments: occipital bone, C1-C2 vertebrae
Action:mainly postural muscles, can help extend and rotate the head
Term
Suboccipital muscles ( What are they)
Definition
rectus capitis posterior major and minor, obliquus capitis superior and inferior
Term
serratus posterior superior
Definition
Location: deep to trap
Origin: spinous process C6-T2
Insertion: 2nd- 5th rib
Action: help extend and rotate the spine
Term
serratus posterior inferior
Definition
Location: superior to erector spinae
Origin: T11-L2
Insertion: ribs 9-12
Action: depress low ribs and help with expiration
Term
semispinalis capitis and cervicis
Definition
Location: extends from transverse to spinous processes
Origin: transverse process of thoracic vertebrae
Insertion: spinous processes of thoracic and cervical spine and occipital bone
Action: bilaterally extend spine, rotate spine contralaterally
Term
splenius capitis and cervicis
Definition
Location: deep to levator scapulae, and rhomboids, superficial to erector spinae muscle
Action: bilateral contraction: extension of the vertebral column, rotation of the vertebral column and contralateral side of the contracting transversospinalis muscle
innervation: segmentally by dorsi rami
Term

Pectoralis major
Definition
Location: superficial to pec minor, chest
Origin: clavicle, sternum, costal cartilage
Insertion:
Action: adduct, med. rotation, flex humerus
Innervation: medial and lateral pectoral nerve C5-T1
Term
pectoralis minor
Definition
Location: deep to pec major
Origin: Ribs 3-5
Insertion: coracoid process of scapula
Action: protraction, depression and stabilize scapula
Innervation: medial pectoral nerve C8-T1
Term
serratus anterior
Definition
Location: Lateral along the ribs
Origin: Ribs 1-8
