Term
Rectus Abdominus
Definition

Origin: xiphoid process and cartilages of ribs 5-7

Termination: pubic symphysis and pubic crest

Vasculature: superior and inferior epigastrics, last 6 intercostals

Innervation: thoracoabdominal nerves

Function: stabilizes pelvis during walking, flexes trunk, depresses ribs

-has 3 or more tendinous intersections

-medial strap muscle

Term
External Oblique
Definition

Origin: ribs 5-12 (interdigitates w/ serratus anterior and latissimus dorsi muscles

Termination: anterior half iliac crest, anterior superior iliac spine

Vasculature: lower intercostals, deep circumflex iliac

Innervation: ventral part of lower 6 intercostals and subcostal nerve

2 coverings:  rectus sheath, external spermatic fascia of spermatic cord

3 ligaments: inguinal, lacunar, and pectineal

1 hole: external/superficial inguinal ring

Term
Internal Oblique
Definition

Origin: Lateral half inguinal ligament, iliac crest, thoracolumbar fascia

Termination: cartilages last 3-4 ribs, linea alba, pubic crest, pectineal line

Vasculature: deep circumflex, lower intercostals

Innervation: intercostal nerves T7-11, subcostal (T12), and iliohypogastric/illoinguinal nerves (L1)

2 coverings: rectus sheath, middle spermatic fascia

1/2 ligament: half conjoint tendon

Term
Tranversus Abdominus
Definition

Origin: internal surfaces 7th-12th costal cartilages

Termination: crest of pubis and pectineal line

Innervation: lower intercostals (T7-11), illiohypogastric/illioinguinal nerves

1 covering: rectus sheath

1/2 ligament: conjoint tendon

Term
Quadratus Lumborum
Definition

Origin: iliac crest

Termination: inferior surface 12th rib and transverse processes of L1-4

Function: draws 12th rib toward pelvis, flexes vertebral column laterally

Term
Iliacus
Definition

Origin: Iliac fossa, iliac crest, base of sacrum

Termination: tendon of psoas major and onto lesser trochanter of femur

Function: assists psoas major, flexes thign, stabilizes hip joint

Term
Psoas Major
Definition

Origin: T12 and all 5 lumbar vertebrae

Termination: Lesser trochanter of femur

Function: great flexor of hip joint

*iliopsoas test-pain produced by rotating hip can indicate problem w/ something in posterior abdominal wall

Term
Psoas Minor Tendon
Definition

Origin: T12, L1

Termination: Pectineal line of pubic bone

Function: assists in flexion of lumar vertebrae

*absent in 1/3 population

Term
Cremaster Muscle
Definition

Origin: from internal abdominal oblique

Termination: attaches by small tendon to pubic tubercle and crest

Function: Draws testes upward

Innervation: genital branch of genitofemoral nerve L1-2

Term
Piriformis muscle
Definition

Origin: anterior sacrum, superior margin greater sciatic notch

Termination: greater trochanter of femur

Function: rotates the hip

Term
Superior Gemelli
Definition

Origin: Outer surface ischium spine

Termination: blends w/ obturator internus tendon to insert on greater trochanter

Function: accesory to tendon of obturator internus

Term
Inferior Gemelli
Definition

Origin: upper part of ischium tuberosity

Termination: blends with tendon of obturator internus and inserts on greater trochanter

Function: accessory to tendon of obturator internus
