Definition

for raw materials was used to ensure materials for the military ratehr than the American people. Ration cards were distributed which limited the amount of materials such as gasoline that a person could obtain

The War Production Board
Definition

Created to enforce a planned economy to ensure that the US had everything they needed for the war. The goal was to centralize, organize and help roduce goods for the war effort.

 

They prohibited the production of nonessential conusumer goods, this was a downside of this movement. Also dictated styles for vicilian apparel in an attempt to conserve anything possibly needed for the war effort.

Rose from 4 million in 1939 to 43 million in 1945. By the end of the war lowest earners were paying 23% and people with extremely high incomes had to pay up to 94%

 

Tax revenues on income only paid for about half of the war so that the US created war bonds to help rovide extra funds.

This led to "brain drain" because the smart people of east germany knew it was a good idea to move into West Germany.

Definition

Senior editor at time magazine, associated with communists and then to becoming anti communist. Chambers presented a list of underground communists working with the US government. ONe of the men was Alger Hiss which was a close advisor to President Truman. At Hiss's farm there was a hollowed out pumpkin containing his list of all the communist's within the government; This was called the Pumpkin Papers!

Convicted of Purgery before HUAC, and was sentenced to Jail Time!

Students specifically, protesting the rights to speak freely on college campus's and public places. UC at Berkeley was the location of a Free Speech Movement rally. Police tried to remove people who were not students. One person refused to show identification and he was arrested. This resulted in a riot to keep the fellow student from being arrested, this was a monumental event in the Free Speech Movement

North Vietnamese soldiers disguised themselves as peasants and transported military goods into south vietnam for the attack
