Term
scrotum
Definition
double sac of skin, muscle, and connective tissue on the exterior of the body just ventral to the anus. Normally the primary reproductive organs, the testes, are inside the sac, however in young males, the testes may be retracted into the abdominal cavity
Term
tunica vaginalis
Definition
a combined layer of muscle and fibrous tissue just beneath the scrotal skin
Term
testis
Definition
the primary sex organ; produces microscopic reproductive cells called sperm or spermatozoa; produce male hormones known as androgens (major one is testosterone)
Term
tunica albuginia
Definition
thin but tough covering seen on the surface of the testis
Term
spermatic cord
Definition
round cord extending from the testis to the abdominal cavity; composed of the vas deferens, testicular artery, testicular vein, nerve, and lymphatics which are all bound together in a sheath containing fatty tissue
Term
testicular artery
Definition
originates from the aorta just caudal to the level of the kidney and descends through the spermatic cord to the testis
Term
testicular vein
Definition
runs from the testis through the spermatic cord and empties into either the postcaval vein or into the renal vein
Term
epididymis
Definition
highly coiled tube closely applied to the surface of the testis
Term
vas deferens
Definition
sperm duct; tube which continues from the epididymis, courses through the spermatic cord, passes through the abdominal wall, loops over the ureter, terminates at the urethra; carries sperm from the testis to the urethra
Term
inguinal canal
Definition
small passage in the abdominal wall through which the spermatic cord passes
Term
urethra
Definition
runs from the urinary bladder through the penis to the outside; carries urine, sperm, and seminal fluid
Term
prostate
Definition
small, hard gland surrounding the urethra just caudal to the urinary bladder; near the entrance of the two sperm ducts to the urethra; secretes a fluid which will carry the sperm to the outside, seminal fluid, which seems to protect and mobilize the sperm
Term
penis
Definition
the male copulatory organ which is visible on the ventral aspect of the cat
Term
prepuce
Definition
outer pocket of skin of penis; also known as the foreskin
Term
glans penis
Definition
distal portion of the penis containing a number of small spines in the cat
Term
urethral orifice
Definition
opening of the urethra at the end of the glans penis
Term
anal glands
Definition
beneath the skin on either side of the rectum near the anus; they produce an odiferous secretion that enters the anus and presumably is used for sexual attraction or stimulation; lacking in humans
Term
seminal vesicles
Definition
two cauliflower-shaped organs which produce seminal fluid
Term
ovaries
Definition
primary sex organs of the female found just caudal to the kidneys and are sometimes buried in a mass of fat; contain follicles which contain developing eggs; produces hormones estrogen and progesterone
Term
ovarian arteries
Definition
arise from the aorta caudal to the level of the kidneys and run to the ovaries
Term
ovarian veins
Definition
found parallel to the ovarian arteries; return blood from the ovaries to either the postcaval vein or to the renal vein
Term
fallopian tube
Definition
very short and highly coiled tube adjacent to the ovary; fertilization usually occurs here; leads to the uterine horn
Term
uterine horns
Definition
long tubular structures continuing from the short fallopian tubes; in the cat, fertilized eggs typically implant and undergo development here; humans lack these in adulthood, instead, the fallopian tubes lead to a single pear-shaped uterus
Term
broad ligament
Definition
mesentery supporting the ovary, fallopian tube, and the uterine horn; extends to the lateral body wall
Term
body of the uterus
Definition
part of the uterus where the two uterine horns join; lies dorsal to the urethra
Term
vagina
Definition
continues from the body of the uterus caudally through the pelvic canal; lies between the urethra and large intestine; unites with the urethra in the cat
Term
vestibule
Definition
the common passageway after the union of the vagina and the urethra
Term
urogenital opening
Definition
opening of the vestibule to the exterior
Term
labia
Definition
the lateral lips bordering the urogenital opening
Term
vulva
Definition
the labia and urogenital opening together
Term
perimetrium
Definition
outermost layer of the uterus
Term
myometrium
Definition
middle layer of the uterus; composed of interlacing smooth muscle bundles which are separated by connective tissue
Term
endometrium
Definition
inner layer of tissue in the uterus; varies cyclically in correlation with ovarian secretory activity
Term
uterine epithelium
Definition
innermost portion of the endometrium; composed of columnar epithelium and found adjacent to the uterine cavity
Term
endometrial glands
Definition
numerous glands seen in the endometrium which open into the uterine cavity; produce "uterine milk" during early pregnancy which is the first source of nourishment for the early embryo
Term
seminiferous tubules
Definition
numerous tubules which make up most of the testis; concerned with the production of sperm cells
Term
spermatozoa
Definition
seen in the center of a seminiferous tubule under high power
Term
interstitial cells of Leydig
Definition
located between the seminiferous tubules; important in the production of androgens
Term
spermatogenic cells
Definition
inside seminiferous tubules, produce sperm cells
