Term
Is qualitative research based around exploring or explaining?
Definition
Exploring....in as much detail as poss
Term
What is Realism?
Definition
Realism is defined as having one reality which exists outside the Mind
Term
What is a paradigm???
Definition

A Paradigm is a WORLDVIEW

" A way of thinking and making sense of the complexeities of the real world"

Term
What is a Positivism  or a positivist?
Definition

A Posativist seeks the facts and causes of social phenomena apart from the subjective states of the individuals

Think

" The purpose of science is simply to stick to what we can observe and measure. Knowledge of anything beyond that, a positivist would hold, is impossible"

Term
What is inductive reasoning?
Definition

Inductive reasoning.. is more open-ended and exploratory, especially at the beginning..moving from specific observations to broader generalizations and theories.

Informally is called a bottom up approch

OBSERVATION------> PATTERN------->TENTATIVE HYPOTHASIS----------->THEORY

Term
WHAT IS DEDUCTIVE REASONING???
Definition

Deductive reasoning works from the more general to the more specific....TOP DOWN Approach.

THEORY------->HYPOTHESIS------->OBSERVATION------>CONFIRMATION

Deductive reasoning is usually part of quantitative studies and relies heavily on facts andfigures ( DATA)

Term
 What is Positivism?
Definition

Positivism believes that science can and should use the methods of the natural sciences, (e.g. physics and chemistry).

Quantitative research and deductive reasoning

Randomised conrol trials , surveys ect

Term
What is Emprical Data?
Definition
Empirical data is based on data
Term
what is Parsimonious?
Definition
Parsimonious is about keeping it simple!
Term

What characterises Pseudoscience?

Definition

  • lacks precise and detailed description
  •  No peer review
Convince with appeal to emotions and beliefs
        personal interests involved

Term
If Quantitative is Deductive, Qualitative is
Definition
Inductive
Term
What is a law?
Definition
A law that has been substantially verified
Term
The experimental researcher manipulates which variable?
Definition
Independent Variable (IV)
Term
the scientist measures the ?
Definition
Dependent variable (DV)
Term

what is "Cum hoc ergo propter hoc" ?

Definition
“With this therefore because of this” to describe the fallacy to assume that correlation is causation.
Term
in non experimental research it is hard to prove what?
Definition
nonexperimental research is observational, therefor is hard to prove causation
Term
what are the key features of experimental research?
Definition
manipulation and control of the extraneous variable
Term
what is validity?
Definition
the extent in which the test measures what it is designed  to measure
Term
what are the 4 different measures of validity?
Definition
  1. Face validity
  2. Construct validity
  3. Internal validity
  4. External Validity
Term
What is face validity?
Definition
does the test appear to measure what is designed to measure
Term
What is contruct validity?
Definition
Construct validity shows what is hard to measure as in Psychology and self esteem. Construct validity has to be taken in conjunction with other research results and hypothesis
Term
What is internl validity?
Definition
Internal vlidity is where all external variables are accounted for, being able to say with confidence that change in DV occured because of change in IV
Term
what is external validity?
Definition
is the process of generalization, and whether results obtained from a small sample group, often in laboratory surroundings, can be extended to make predictions about the entire population
