The subjunctive is a mood that allows you to express a point of view: fear, doubt, hope, possibility, in sum, anything that is not a fact. It is used, primarily in a subordinate clause.

Not all verbs in subordinate clauses (those after que) are necessarily to be put in the subjunctive, only those connected with a main clause berb that expresses a "nonfact" (fear, supposition, anticipation, wish, hope, doubt, etc.)
