A Genre Approach to Writing

In a genre approach to writing students and teachers work to develop an explicit understanding of how language works so they can grow as readers and writers.  Writing begins by exploring a particular genre such as biography or fantasy by reading and studying its structure. From these reading comprehension lessons the students and teachers move to creating their own texts in the same genre.
