purification that brings emotional relief or renewal. ex: teddy swalowed the contents of a bottle of shoe polish so his mother gave him a raw egg as a catartic to make him vomit. to someone with psycho problems, talking to a shrink can lead to a catharsis - a traumatic event after which one feels better. catharsis=cathartic. some ppl find emotional movies cathartic, watching one allows them to release buried emotion. cathartic can also be a noun

to condemn severly for doing something bad. ex: the senate sometimes censures senators for breaking laws or engaginf in behavior unbecoming to an elected official. also a noun: the clumsy physician feared the censure of his fellow doctors, so he stopped treating anything more complicated than the common cold. to be censorious is to be highly critical

brainy; intellectually refined. ex: ur cerebrum is the biggest part of your brain. to be cerebral is to do and care about things that really smart ppl do /care about. a cerebral discussion is one that is filled w/ big words and concerns abstruse matters that ordinary ppl cant understand

humiliation; embarassed disappointment. ex: much to my chagrin, i began to giggle during the eulogy. doug was filled w/ chagrin when he lost the race b/c he had put his shoes on the wrong feet. def note of shame in the word chagrin

a magical -seeming abiility to attract followers or inspire loyalty. ex: the candidate had a lot of charisma; voters were entranced by him.
