I.e. The sum of 2 and 3 is 5.
Term
Difference
Definition
A subtraction problem or its answer
Term
Product
Definition
A Multiplication problem or its answer
Term
Quotient
Definition
A division problem or its answer
Term
acute
Definition
less than 90 degrees

(As in an acute angle)
Term
another name for zero
Definition
the additive identity
Term
Additive inverse
Definition
the opposite of a number...

Additive inverses or opposites add up to zero. For example, 3 and -3 are additive inverses since 3+(-3)=0.
Term
What is the difference between an equation and an expression?
Definition
Expressions use numbers, variables, and symbols to represent a single number. They don't have equals signs or inequality signs.

Equations and inequalities compare two numbers or expressions.

2+4 ----> expression.
2+4=6 ----> equation
2<4 ----> inequality
Term
Algebraic expression
Definition
An expression that contains variables

I.e. 3x - 2

(notice there is no equals sign;)
Term
Associative Property of Addition
Definition
(a+b)+c=a+(b+c)

Associative means you can change the grouping, but NOT the order.
Term
Associative Property of Multiplication
Definition
(ab)c=a(bc)

When multiplying (or adding), you can multiply (or add) the first two numbers first or the last two first. It doesn't matter.
Term
Expression
Definition
A group of math symbols that represent a single number.

(NO equals sign!!!)
Term
Numerical expression
Definition
an expression that has no variables

(We SIMPLIFY expressions.)
Term
Equation
Definition
expression = expression

(We SOLVE equations.)
Term
Commutative Property of Addition
Definition
a+b=b+a
Term
Commutative Property of Multiplication
Definition
ab=ba
Term
Associative Property for Subtraction
Definition
Subtraction is NOT associative.
Term
5/0
Definition
UNDEFINED!!!
Term
Commutative Property of Division
Definition
Division is NOT commutative!
Term

Definition
Because the additive identity is 0, and division by zero is dangerous and forbidden.
