  • most active at dawn or dusk, or hevily shaded areas
  • act as vectors for malaria
  • Imorpant in many wildlife and fish food chains.
  • Antennae indicates sex
  • males lives only a few eeks, females a few months

  • BECAUSE OF WHITE HEAD CAN BE MISTAKEN FOR BALD EAGLE
  • their large nests are explanded on every year bult in tsll dead trees. and will use man made structures for nest platforms

  • MATE FOR LIFE, both parents assist in caring for young
  • breeding happens in April or May
  • Stay with parentals for a year then dsperse
  • litter size of two to three
  • otters are aquatic animals, but have to be taught how to swim
  • ADAPTIONS FOR AN AQUATIC LIFE-while swimming under water their heart rate slows to conserve oxygen and flaps of skin cover nostrils and ears to kep water out. Can stay underwater three to four minutes straight  skin never gets wet because of very think hair
  • whiskers detect movement
  • mark territories with scent posts ex: dung posts also used as toilet
  • Qualits of their fur is rated 100% on scale, making it a target for hunters

Definition
  • can be found in canada, to South America
  • diet consists of new growth twigs, grasses, fruits, and acorns.
  • Have four stomachs.  Food is regurgitated from this stomach an re-chewed. This process is known as rumination, and the act is chewing a cud. The fourth stomach, the abomasum, is the only true stomach and has a lining which allows for nutritional uptake.  
  • Site fidelity-remain in same area for long period of time Movements actually form trails in habitat
  • feed in night, and during extreme heat
  • mate with many different partners, buck very territorial during rut season, mark yterritroy with urination and scraping of trees
  • peak breeding time is from July through February

  • OMNIVORES
  • no sweat glands
  • feed mostly at night, live close to water or mud, mostly found in wetlands, but are adaptable to many environments
  • roam in group constisting of sows and their young
  • neither sex is territorial, breed year around, sows have one or two litters a year
  • litters have 5-12 piglet, infant mortality low
  • carry pseudorabies disease, witch can harm lovestock and humans, and carry manay parasites
  • damage crops
