Term
Basic sewage systems
Definition
Centralized Municipal System
CSO- Combined Sewer Overflow
Waste Treatment
Composting System
Residential (rural)system: Septic
Term
Site features to manage water flows
Definition
1.bioswales
2.retention/detention ponds
3.pervious surfaces
Term
Water flows and percentages on earth
Definition
water covers 70% of the earth’s surface. Only one percent of the world’s fresh water is accessible for direct human uses.
Term
The four R’s:
Definition
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Regenerate
Term
SLOPE of Horizontal drain pipes =
Definition
1/8” –1/4” per foot
Term
Typical Sewage system components (for Rural areas):
Definition
1. Pipe from House
2. Septic Tank
3. Drain field
4. Soil (dirt)
Term
Pipe from House:
Definition
Household waste water exits thru a pipe that flows into septic tanks
Term
Septic Tank:
Definition
it is a buried, watertight container, holds solids long enough for sludge to occur, the tank needs to be pumped every 3-5 years
Term
drainfield:
Definition
when new water enters septic tank, the same amount of waste water exits the tank and is pushed into it.
Term
soil (dirt):
Definition
Septic tank wastewater flows to the drain field, where it percolates into the soil and is filtered. Natural processes remove contaminants in the wastewater before it eventually reaches groundwater.
Term
3 types of pervious surfaces
Definition
1 porous asphalt
2 permeable pavers
3 grass pavers (aka turf blocks)
Term
porous asphalt
Definition
mixed at conventional asphalt plant, but uses only large aggregates for porosity
Term
permeable pavers
Definition
impermeable blocks set on a prepared sand base
Term
grass pavers
Definition
(improves site appearance)

open-cell unit paver where cells are filled with soil and planted with turf. the paver distribute weight of traffic and prevent compression of underlying soil
Term
US Energy Consumption
Definition
Petroleum 39%
Gas 24%
Coal 22%
Nuclear 7%
Renewables 8%
Term
bioswales
Definition
densely vegetated open channels designed to remove silt and pollution from surface runoff water.
Term
grass channels
Definition
cheapest swale, but least reliable pollutant removal. Much like a conventional ditch but wider. usually acts as the first step in storm water treatment
Term
riprap
Definition
a permanent cover of rock
Term
dry and wet swales
Definition
dry: fabricated soil bed of sand/soil that meets minimum permeability requirements. has underdrain system of gravel

wet: vegetated with water tolerant vegetaion, designed to retain water. often used along highways
Term
retention/ detention ponds
Definition
retention: to limit flooding and pollutant removal. catch runoff from higher eleavtion areas

detention: designed mostly for flood control. a low lying area to temporarily hold water while slowly draining to another location.
Term
Venting performs four functions
Definition
1)At each fixture trap, air in the system (branch / vent stack) keeps atmospheric pressure at the trap
2)Exhausts sewer gases and odors to outdoors (stack vent)
3)Allows fresh air into the drain pipe (soil / main stack)
4)Aids the smooth flow of waste in the drain pipe (soil stack)
Term
stack vent VS vent stack:
Definition
Stack vent: a vent extension of a soil/waste stack

Vent stack: a major supplier of air for a drainage system and is commonly used on multi-story soil or waste stacks. Must either terminate to outside air or be tied into a vent header.
Term
Soil stack:
Definition
Also referred to as MAIN STACK, carries soil waste (toilets)
Term
Waste stack:
Definition
Doesn’t carry soil waste (assoc. with sinks, tubs, showers, etc.)
Term
Grease traps:
Definition
On septic (or other) lines to separate grease/oils from other waste
Term
The Great Lakes and water:
Definition
The largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth and roughly 21% of the world's surface fresh water.
Term
Typical household's Highest amount of water usage:
Definition
Irrigation - 51%
Term
3 types of bioswales:
Definition
1 grass channels
2 dry swales
3 wet swales
Term
Larger scale systems of waste in our building culture as opportunities for innovation and change.
Definition
