Term
Where is traffic shaping configured on vSS?
Definition
On the switch level. The settings are propogated down to all port groups, but can be over ridden per port group.
Term
Where is traffic shaping configured on vDS?
Definition
ON the dvPort group, not on the vDS level
Term
Which statement is correct? Traffic shaping policies can be set for:
A: Ingress traffic only on vDS, both ingress and egress for vSS
B: Ingress traffic only on vSS, both ingress and egress for vDS
C: Egress traffic only on vSS, both ingress and egress for vDS
D: Both ingress and egress on both vSS and vDS
Definition
C: vSS - you can only configure egress (outgoing) traffic. vDS - you can configure both egress (outgoing) and ingress (incoming) traffic
Term
Where does burst bonus come from?
Definition
Ports gain a burst bonus when it does not use all of the bandwidth it is allocated. When the port needs additional bandwidth then defined in Average Bandwidth, it can use its burst bonus. The Burst Size setting will limit the number of Kbytes gained by the burst bonus
Term
What is TCP Segmentation Offload (TSO)?
Definition
TCP Segmentation Offload (or TCP Large Send) is when buffer's much larger than the supported maximum transmission unit (MTU) of a given medium are passed through the bus to the network interface card. The work of dividing the much larger packets into smaller packets is thus offloaded to the NIC.
Term
Where is TSO enabled?
Definition
TSO is enabled by default on the VMkernel interface. TSO can be enabled at the OS level for some operating systems: MS Windows 2003 EE (SP2), RHEL 4 (64bit) and 5 (32 and 64 bit), SUSE Linux ES 10 (32 and 64 bit)
Term
What virtual adapter is required for TSO?
Definition
The enhanced vmxnet virtual network adapter
Term
What can you do to remediate if TSO somehow gets disabled on a VMkernel interface?
Definition
You must delete the VMkernel interface and recreate it with TSO enabled
Term
What layers can Jumbo Frames be enabled at?
Definition
vSS, vDS, VM, VMkernel
Term
What is a Jumbo Frame?
Definition
A jumbo Frame is a 9KB (9000 byte) frame that enables less frames to be sent and push more throughput on a physical interface
Term
Can jumbo frames run on any physical infrastructure?
Definition
In order to take full advantage of jumbo frames your physical infrastructure must not only support them, but be configured for them, end-to-end
Term
T/F: VMware tools are required to use the vmxnet virtual adapters
Definition
True
