  • To qualify for federal funds, a health center must be located in a medically underserved area, operate as nonprofit, provide primary and preventive care, and provide services regardless of ability to pay.

  • Works w/communities & HC facilities to provide HC to individuals living in underserved areas too far from facilities.
  • The NHSC recruits students to serve in shortage areas by rewarding scholarships, etc.

  • Supports health centers and other community providers to deliver care, either on-site or a nearby location, to residents of public housing, low-income individuals living near public housing, etc.
  • Services include direct primary care, dental & preventive care, prenatal, health screenings, and so on.

  • Federal initiative to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities
  • Advises the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services on public health issues affecting minorities.
  • Collects and analyzes data on the health of racial and ethnic minority populations and monitors national efforts to achieve the goals in Healthy People 2020. It also continues to regularly fund cooperative agreements and grants that support many research and demonstration programs.
