British Anti-Lewisite (BAL)

 

Definition

MECH: Binds Lewisite. But also Lead, Arsenic, inorganic mercury.

CAUTION: Mixed in Peanut oil -- allergies. MAKE PATIENTS URINE ALKALINE--acidic urine can disrupt chelation (causes severe kidney toxicity).

USE: Intramuscular injection for acute lead poisoning.

Definition

USE: Chelate Lead, Cadmium, Mercury forming a heterocyclic ring. Well tolerated and orally available.

Calcium Disodium EDTA

(CaNa2EDTA)

Definition

USE: Lead poisoning.

AE: Causes renal toxicity (so does lead).

DONT CONFUSE WITH DISODIUM EDTA (Na2EDTA).

WILL NOT GET TO BRAIN--may even increase penetration.
