Term

PHENYLEPHRINE (NEO SYNEPHRINE)

CLASS: ADRENERGENIC AGENT (SYMPATHOMIMETIC)

ACTION: ALPHA ADRENERGIC AGONIST REDUCES NASAL CONGESTION BY CONSTRICTING SMALL BLOOD VESSELS IN TEH NASAL MUCOSA.

PREG C CATEGORY

ADVERSE RX REBOUND CONGESTION, DO NOT USE WITH MAO INHIBITORS

OVERDOSE: TACHYCARDIA, HTN

TX WITH ALPHA BLOCKER PHENTOLAMINE

Definition
Term

PRAZOSIN

CLASS: ANTIHYPERTENSIVE ADRENERGIC BLOCKING AGENT

SELECTIVE ALPHA ADRENERGIC ANTAGONIST THAT COMPETES WITH NOREPINEPHRINE AT ITS RECEPTORS ON VASCULAR SMOOTH MUSCLE IN ARTERIOLES AND VEINS. MAJOR ACTION RAPID DECREASE IN PERIPHERAL RESISTANCE THAT REDUCES BLOOD PRESSURE. MINIMAL EFFECT ON CARDIAC OUTPUT.

GIVE LOW FIRST DOSE TO AVOID HYPOTENSION

PREG. CATEGORY C

Definition

ADVERSE RX: ORTHOSTATIC HYPOTENSION, LIGHT HEADEDNESS

DRUG/DRUG: ANTIHYPERTENSIVES/DIURETICS CAUSE DECREASE IN BP

OD: USE NS OR DOPAMINE OR DOBUTAMINE

Term

BETHANECHOL DUVOID, URECHOLINE

NONOBSTRUCTIVE URINARY RETENTION AGENT

ACTION: DIRECT ACTING PARASYMPATHOMIMETIC INTERACTS WITH MUSCARINIC RECEPTORS CAUSING TYPICAL PARASYMPATHETIC STIMULATION. STIMULATES SMOOTH MUSCLE CONTRACTION.

NEVER GIVE IM OR IV

ADVERSE EFFECTS: DO NOT USE IN PT WITH COPD, INCREASED GI TRACT CONTRACTIONS, URINARY OBSTRUCTION.  CAUSES INCREASED SALIVATION, SWEATING, ABD. CRAMPING AND HYPOTENSION

Definition

DRUG-DRUG: INCREASED CHOLINERGIC EFFECTS FROM CHOLINESTERASE INHIBITORS AND DECREASED CHOLINERGIC EFFECTS FROM PORCAINAMIDE, QUINIDINE, ATROPINE AND EPINEPHRINE.

LABS: CAN INCREASE ast, AMYLASE, LIPASE

TX OF OD: ATROPINE SULFATE

Term

ATROPINE (ATRO PEN, ATROPAIR, ATROPISOL)

THERAPUTIC CLASS:ANTIDOTE FOR ANTICHOLINERASE POISIONING

ACTION: BLOCKS THE PARASYMPATHETIC ACTIONS OF Ach AND INDUCES S/S OF FIGHT OR FLIGHT

NEVER GIVE IM MONITOR VS

ADVERSE RX: DRY MOUTH CONSTIPATION, URINARY RETENTION, INCREASED HEART RATE

CONTRAINDICATIONS: GLAUCOMA, PT WITH GI OBSTRUCTIVE DISORDERS, BPH, CARDIAC INSUFFICIENCY

Definition

DRUG/DRUG: INCREASED EFFECT WITH ANTIHISTAMINES, TRICYCLIC ANTIDEPRESSANTS, QUINIDINE, PROCAINAMIDE. DECREASES EFFECTS OF DOPAMINE

TX OF OD: GIVE VALIUM

Term
Escitalopram Oxalate (Lexapro)
ANTIDEPRESSANT ANXIOLYTIC
stop all MAOI 14d prior, preg category C increase weekly.
DRUG/Drug: no breast feeding, avoid alcohol.
Definition
SSRI increases avail seritonin, selective inhibition results in antidepressive behavior. tx panic disorders
