Men could marry multiple wives, but all had to be treated equally.  Women were allowed only one husband.  Adultry was forbidden.  Both men and women were equal before Allah.

Definition
Dhimmis (people of the book) paid an extra tax for not being Muslim.  Dhimmis were protected people; most were Christians and Jews.  Dhimmis could convert to Islam for reduced taxes and more equality before authorities.

City of Damascus.  This city was the capital city of the Umayyad Caliphate.  The Umayyad architecture is prominent and the largest structure in the city was built by the Umayyads.
