Term
Zinc
Definition
Deficiency leads to Acrodermatitis enteropathica and childhood pneumonia, diarrhea.
AE is very rare- auto recessive- child will have alopecia, skin lesion, impaired immunity. Disease is caused by the partial blocking of GI, which is where Zn is absorbed.
Treat with high doses of Zn.
Can also get acquired AE by giving nutrients TPN because nutrients not go through GI for ZN absorption
Term
Copper
Definition
Wilson's disease, Copper Deficiency
Wilson- Rare autosomal recessive. Have high organ copper levels in liver, kidney, brain. Labs will show low ceruplasmin and copper, high tissue biopsy copper**. Treat with penicillamine and Zn (Zn affects Cu absorption in GI). Careful because Penicillamine non specific chelayting agent so will excrete Cu and Zn.
Copper deficiency labs- Microcytic anemia, neutropenia, leukopenia, GI issues- can also be caused by high levels of Zn.
Term
Iron
Definition
Iron deficiency anemia- microcytic anemia.
Most common nutritional deficiency in USA and worldwide.
Hereditary Hemochromatosis- causes iron toxicity to several organs- iron accumulates in the organs. With deficiency- worried about fertile women and young children.
Gene C282Y- those with it more likely to get hemochromatosis- can't control absorption of Fe so it slowly builds up in organ and causes symptoms. Control level of Iron at level of absorption. Elderly tend to have higher than normal levels of Fe.
Term
Iodine
Definition
Third most prevalent deficiency
Get Thyroid issue.
Iodized salt a major source
If deficient in iodine get enlarged thyroid or goiter- most common in young, middle aged women
