Term

Alendronate

Definition

Fosamax®

Class: Bisphosphonate

MOA: Inhibits bone resorption via actions osteoclasts or on osteoclast precursors; decreases the rate of bone resorption, leading to an indirect increase in bone mineral density

Pregnancy: C

Term

Side Effects of Alendronate

Definition
Common SE: abdominal pain, acid regurgitation, nausea, dyspepsia, constipation, diarrhea, musculoskeletal pain, flatulence, photosensitivty
Term

Ranitidine HCl

Definition

Zantac®

Class: H2 Anatagonist

MOA: Competative inhibition of histamine at H2 receptors of the gastric parietal cells, which inhibits gastric acid secretion, gastric volume, and hydrogen ion concentration are reduced. Does not affect pepsin secretion, pentagastrin-stimulated intrinsic factor secretion, or serum gastrin

Pregnancy: B

Term

Side Effects of Ranitidine HCl

Definition
Common SE: headache, diarrhea constipation, muscle aches, vertigo, malaise, dizziness, dry mouth, dry skin, nausea, vomiting, rash, confusion, fatigue
Term

Meloxicam

Definition

Mobic®

Class: NSAID

MOA: Reversibly inhibits cyclooxygenase-1 and 2 (COX-1 and 2) enzymes, which result in decreased formation of prostaglandin precursors; has antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties

Pregnancy: C/D (3rd trimester)

Term

Side Effects of Meloxicam

Definition
Common SE: dyspepsia, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, rash, urticaria, dizziness, somnolence, elevated liver transaminases, fluid retention, edema, tinnitus, bruising, photosensitivity
Term

Diazepam

Definition

Diastat®, Valium®

Class: Benzodiazepine

MOA: Binds to stereospecific benzodiazepine receptors on the post synaptic GABA neuron at several sites within the CNS, including the limbic system, reticular formation. Enhancement of the inhibitory effect of GABA on neuronal excitability results by increased neuronal membrane permeability to chloride ions. The shift in chloride ions results in hyperpolarization (a less excitable state) and stabilization

Pregnancy: D

Schedule: C-IV

Term

Side Effects of Diazepam

Definition
Common SE: drowsiness, fatigue, ataxia, confusion, depression, joint pain, headache, tremor, dystonia, amnesia, urinary retention, constipation, nausea, incontinence, diplopia, dizziness, irritability, disinhibition, libido changes, rash, dry mouth, hypersalivation, menstrual irregularities, hypotension, elevated liver transaminases
Term

Naproxen

Definition

Aleve®, Anaprox®, Naprelan®, Naprosyn®

Class: NSAID

MOA: Reversibly inhibits cyclooxygenase-1 and 2 (COX-1 and 2) enzymes, which result in decreased formation of prostaglandin precursors; has antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties

Pregnancy: C/D (3rd trimester)

Term

Side Effects of Naproxen

Definition
Common SE: dyspepsia, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, rash, elevated liver transaminases, fluid retention, tinnitus, bruising, dyspnea, photosensitivity
Term

Propoxyphene-N/APAP

Definition

Darvocet-N®

Class: Opioid Analgesic Combination

MOA: Binds to opiate receptors to inhibits ascending pain pathways. It blocks pain perception in in the cerebral cortex by binding tp specific receptor molecules within the neuronal membranes of synapses.

Pregnancy: C

Schedule: C-IV

REMOVED FROM MARKET IN NOV 2010 B/C OF INCREASED CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIAS

Term

Side Effects of Propoxyphene-N/APAP

Term

Fluconazole

Definition

Diflucan®

Class: Antifungal

MOA: Interferes with fungal cytochrome P450 activity, decreasing ergosterol synthesis and inhibiting cell membrane formation

Pregnancy: C

Term

Definition
Common SE: nausea, headache, rash, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dyspepsia, taste changes, dizziness, elevated liver transaminases
Term

Methylprednisolone

Definition

Medrol®

Class: Corticosteroid

MOA: Decreases inflammation by suppression of migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and reversal of increased capillary permeability
